Re: Can someone tell me: Is there an easy, self taught

Anie, You must have some talent for playing the flute to begin with? I just heard that playing the flute is very difficult to learn. I'm hoping to pick it up in a month or so, only because you said that you are playing the flute now with only 3 weeks of learning. Moving the fingers, and holding the...

Re: Can someone tell me: Is there an easy, self taught

I do have the book, Essential elements 2000 plus the DVD. True, working from a book is sometimes difficult, and it would be easier, I guess, to watch people. I just don't know where to put my fingers. It shows how to in books, but the diagrams, I feel just aren't big enough for me to get a clear pi...

Re: Can someone tell me: Is there an easy, self taught

As an adult beginner myself, (3 weeks in), I've been using the same band book my daughter uses for her trumpet, Essential Elements 2000 in conjunction with all the great you tube videos available. We have the Smart Music program on out computer which has a very large assortment of material, includin...

Re: Advice on Sleepy Finger

Yes, try it with some tape first to see if you like it. I also use the Bo pep finger LH rest as well. Good Luck! I'll give it a shot. Do you find that the Bo pep helps in distributing the weight? Mine hasn't come in yet. I was looking through Jennifer Cluff's website and saw that she uses those squ...

Re: How does one start?

I'm in a very similar boat to yours. At the age of 35 I decided to pick up the flute so I could play with my daughter who is learning trumpet. I'm learning on my own, with lots of help from the great tutorials on YouTube and other sites. I would love to take real lessons, but just don't have the tim...

Re: Advice on Sleepy Finger

No worries, Cmybliss, use the least possible amount of glue, apply it to the pearl not the key, be sure to not get any on pads, and you will be fine. My teacher glued a tiny piece of sandpaper to my oboe and, once my finger placement improved, took it off without incident. If you are apprehensive, ...

Rossweisse - I don't want to hijack this thread, but for anyone interested, here's a brochure that I distributed at the local Flute Faire. There's an email address in it for more information. http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa431/Musicman944/Royalty%20Crowns/RoyaltyFluteCrowns8.jpg If you want ...

Re: Advice on Sleepy Finger

Thank you all again for your very helpful advice! I have changed the alignment of my flute. I'm now using the Rockstro method and find I am having less problems with my sleepy finger. I did consult with a flute playing friend of mine, and my Dr., regarding this problem. My Dr. said I have nerves tha...

Re: Introduction of a newbie

Ah, I didn't see this before I responded to your question about your finger! I am impressed. You are using new facial muscles and it takes a while for them to get used to being used. Brava! Thanks! I'm pretty impressed with myself. I remember finding the flute so difficult in grade school. Perhaps ...

Re: Advice on Sleepy Finger

I've not had a similar experience but wonder whether your flute has an off set or inline G key. People with smallish hands sometimes position their hands uncomfortably on inline keys or the flute is not a good fit (there are differences amongst flutes, some are comfy others not so much). Just a WAG...

Advice on Sleepy Finger

Hello all you knowledgeable and helpful flutists, I'm a complete beginner at the flute (a week in!) and am having an issue with the index finger on my left hand getting pins and needles. This doesn't surprise me, as the same thing happens to my right hand when I use my heavy dressmaking shears or th...

Introduction of a newbie

A big hello to all the members on the board! I'm very excited to be here. A little about myself: My daughter started playing trumpet in her school band at the beginning of this school year. She's pretty good, so we signed her up for private lessons as well. Because of vision problems and proce...
