Aloha fellow flutists! I have a question concerning the
importance of tonguing. My beginner/intermediate method book seems to stress
tonguing a lot. I personally think it adds a choppy feel to a song. Of course on
some songs that''s desired, but the majority of songs it seems to me tonguing
in unnecessary. How often do you all tongue? What is your opinion on the topic?

Tonguing
Personally, I feel tonguing is an important skill to learn. It
will be required in many songs that you play. There are songs that require
double and triple tonguing and that would be difficult if you never learn on how
tongue properly. As with other skills when playing the flute... tonguing will
get smoother as you work at it so it will not sound choppy if you are doing it
correctly. Kim

On NOT tounging (properly): I was at a concert this week, and
the flautists sounded like they where "huffing" into their flutes, for lack of a
better description. Tounging adds a crispness and clarity to the notes. It might
not sound right to you, but try a test with someone sitting in the back of an
auditorium! Good technique makes for better sound.
