Practice Books

Postby Fotofavoloso » Sat Dec 19, 2015 8:07 pm

I am just getting back into playing )having not played for a good part of the last 20 years).

I am looking for good practice books to get me up to speed. My sight reading is poor at best. I can play the simple Back sonata's and Songs like Spain, by Chick Corea. (to give you an idea of my level)

What are you thoughts on the Trevor Wye Practice Books for the Flute: Omnibus Edition ?

Also, any other recommendations for practicing scales and tonging exercises?

Your advice is most appreciated.

Mark

Hi Mark,

I myself am getting back into flute after a break. I usually come back to scales with Taffanel and Gaubert Daily Exercises nos 1,2 and 4. The book has loads of exercises to get the fingers moving and they can be adapted to work on anything.
The Wye books are also good. I haven't used them myself, but I have looked through them a lot.

Hope it goes well.
Take care.

I started with the flute again after trying to learn it years ago (mainly a brass player). I picked up several books, and the Trevor Wye book is solid. I have a few other books on technique and exercises, and the Trevor Why book is one of, if not the most challenging books. It throws tough combinations at you when you are learning technique, but it works. I cannot speak for the rest of the book, but from what I've seen so far, it is a good one.
