Suite in A minor

I am playing this piece called Suite in A minor No. 1 Ouverture by Georg Philipp Telemann for a solo competition in February. Has anyone ever played this before? Have any thoughts on the piece/tips? I have only worked on the first fifty-nine measures but I also only started working on it on Thursday..it isn't too hard. It is a grade one piece and it's sounds pretty..I am hoping to advance all the way to state with it..so anything could help really! Thanks

Try to find a recording of this peace played by Julius Baker, long ago. This is the best concept I ever heard about Teleman A minor overture.
I've played this once with an orchestra, keeping always that recording in mind...

I love this piece and it has a special place in my heart. If you can get a hold of the Julius Baker recording, that would be fab. I've got Jean Pierre Rampall and it's okay.
On hand, I do have 2 version in the podcast:

at 22:47 a recorder version of the teleman piece starts. I like the phrasing he uses. At 54:46, there's a recording of me ftom 1992 (yeah, I was wee little flautists) that starts.

As for tips, be mindful of dynamics and articulation. Everytime you have a section that repeats and copies itself, echo it with a softer return. Keep your 16th notes crisp and lightly tongued. Something that I had trouble with was that I would speed up in the middle of the 1st movement especially once I got comfortable with the piece and it would start to sound a little rushed.

wow, that is REALLY good advice. Best I have received yet. I found a recording by Laurel Zucker and Erkel Chamber Orchestra awhile back and i love the piece. the competition is in three weeks and three days. i think your advice will help a lot, i will practice right now!(:

Competition is in TWO days. I really hope I am ready. My nerves get really strong when I have to play in front of ANYONE so I am just hoping for the best. My accompanist is really nice and I got to work with her twice so I hope that goes well. She is wonderful with following me, no matter how much I mess up. Anyway, I was just posting to ask for everyone's good luck wishes. I will let you all know if I do well..and if I don't you will be able to tell by no response:p

Just remember that anyone listening to you is wanting to enjoy the music. Even the judges! So just enjoy yourself and the music, and that will come across... and it'll probably help your playing too. Good luck!

thank you, your advice really came in handy. i got a first division and if i wouldn't have chickened out and played it memorized i would have went to the state competition..but hey, that's nobody's fault but my own. i still got a first division and if i was doing an ensemble instead of a solo that would have taken me to the state competition. anyway, thank you for your advice and everyone else's.

this only makes me want it even more for next year.
