Deaf Dog - New Tricks

Post by ASL-Lexicon »

Hi All, I am 31 and have started learning the
flute four weeks ago. I have never had any music experience (I can''t even
read music). I am a Sign Language Interpreter by trade and have decided to teach
this old-dog [just teasing about "o-l-d"] a new trick. I have always wanted to
learn an instrument and have always loved the sound of the flute. Sadly, I was
never provided with the opportunity to learn a musical instrument in school.
But, as I was growing up, I told myself "when you have the time and money - go
learn!" Surprising enough, this summer I have both the time and money! I found a
music store near my house and ask them about lessons. They sent me to the local
college. So, I registered at the college for lessons and rented a flute. The
instructor seems fabulous. I have also discovered Fluteland.com. I became a
member and have begun watching the lessons. I have really appreciated reading
all messages on this board! This really is a different world, a musical world.
Of course, being a beginner, I find myself totally lost- but very excited. I
would greatly appreciate any comments, words of wisdom, warnings or just general
''chat''. []

Hi! Its great that you're learning flute and
enjoying it so much! In the way of learning how to read music, you read from the
bottom of the staff to the top. The spaces in the staff are F, A, C, E, just
remember face, and the lines in the staff are, E, G, B, D, F, just remember
something like, every good boy deserves fruit, there are other ones like it. As
you go above and below the staff there are other notes, and they have ledger
lines, they are little lines that go through the notes or under then or above
them. As you continue learning you will learn about sharps, flats and the
different key signatures. Search for Larry Krantz in google and it will lead to
his website, his site has fingering charts and more information on flute
playing. There are also sites on the internet where you can buy and download
sheet music. flutepuppy.com has an extensive range of music and has a grading
system in stars, so beginning players would look for one star and more stars as
they get better. fluteland.com and flutesmith.com are also other sites where you
can buy flutes, flute accessories and sheet music and recordings. Anyway if you
would like anymore help feel free to let is know and we'll see what we can do,
bye!

see what I can do. I'm only 15 so I might not know all the advanced stuff but I
