AHHHHHHH To Much Air!

Post by concertpianist16 »

My playing is so breathy. I need to get rid of it now. I'm trying to do video recording but the video camera picks up a lot of breathing and air. I really want to get rid of this sound but I need help because I'm completely self taught. But I'm not bad at playing.
Here's a sample of my playing:

I play:
Piano
Organ
Clarinet
Flute
Recorder
Penny Whistle
Harmonica
Jaw Harp
Cello
Violin
Guitar
Mandolin
Ukulele

Judging from listening to that recording, I would say that it's not just the mic picking up extra 'air.' It just happens that microphones are sensitive to that particular sound. Professional mic setups have high-end mics designed for music recording. In your case, you do have an airy tone, and the mic just happens to be picking it up well.

Best thing is to practice on your tone. I didn't get my 'tone' until I had playing for over 8 years. I still improve upon it.

Go to your local music store and pick up some study material. Trevor Wye has one specifically for tone. I would definitely give that one a shot if you can find it.

Not that this adds much to the thread, but I was fortunate enough to find my tone very early on... However, it seems that I have misplaced it recently, and I cant remember where I put it down...

My flute professor says the 'center' of my tone is gone..... hmmm....

My Trevor Wye Omnibus book is back on my music stand again.... :/ [not that it should have ever left....]

Thank you MRBAZ. I found that placing the microphone above my eye (It's a headset) eliminated all the breathy sounds but it still sounds hollow.

supposedly Julius Baker had a really trashy tone up close, but at a gorgeous tone from the concert hall. If you sound really wispy up close, there is a small chance that people observing you playing from the concert hall will hear the wispyness. I hope this is what you are talking about, and if so i will have you know that this bothered the crap out of me too until recently when my current flute teacher gave me this shpeel.

Hope this helps, even though the post is a little late
