Left handed flutes

Post by sinebar »

Do they make left handed flutes? I have a friend who wants to learn but she's left handed and none of the local stores have even heard of a left handed flute.

The Boehm flute does not come in right- and left-handed versions. Some more primitive flutes, such as the traverso could be played in either direction, but not the modern concert flute. If she wanted to spend many thousands of dollars, I'm sure she could convince a maker to modify the mechanism, but there's really very little call for that, as which hand is dominant doesn't play much role in performing on the flute. I know several southpaws who play flute quite successfully on standard models from well known companies.

I'm left-handed -- VERY left-handed. More like left-sided. LOL But flutepicc06 is right... which hand is dominant really doesn't come into play on the flute. You really need both hands to work together equally. :D

Hey that's great. I'll pass it on to my friend. She'll be happy to hear that.

I agree. I am very right handed, but on flute, you have to use both hands, so it doesnt really matter which one is dominant. Actually, in the future, being left handed could possibly be a benefit, because a lot of the complicated fingerings are in the left hand mostly.

I agree with everyone above. I've found that while I hold the flute on the right side, I have the most trouble with fingerings requiring more from my right hand than the Eb/D# key - mostly because I'm left handed.
So, I'd tell your friend that they should just work extra hard on training their right hand, since the fingerings on the left will most likely come more easily.

 it is quite interesting to "flush out" the left handers amongst us .. heheh. In a way i would expect that there would be quite a few right brained people out there. aint we just an interesting bunch lol. Seriously though it takes a good balance between right and left brain to be both creative and logical.

I am left handed as well....it really doesn't make a difference what hand you normally use since you have to be very dexterious with both hands to master the flute.

I'm ambidextrous but I don't think I have any advantage over right handed or left handed people.
