How can you really clean a flute?

Never, never use silver polish...it
can really gum up the working mechanisms of your flute and destroy your pads.
You can never quite remove all of it once it gets in all those little nooks and
crannies either. As a 12 year old, I figured if Mom used polish on the silver
flatwear, it should be OK for my flute. I ended up making a big mess and never
did it again. As an adult, I've purchased a new flute and use a polishing cloth
on it every now and then. Usually, I just wipe it down with a very soft cloth.
To minimize the amount of tarnish, keep you flute in its case when you're not
using it. That was another nasty habit I had when I was a kid! [:p]

PS: Minsmusic, I have heard of Silvo.
We have it here in Canada...must be something only available in "the colonies"
and not in the States! [:bigsmile:]

you tell with your eye if it were removing silver plating? There aren't many
microns of silver on a plated flute and many silver polishes and polishing
clothes do remove some silver. Some people say it will not only mess up the look
eventually it will also mess up the sound
