high note trouble

Post by SurfChik415 »

Hey fellow flutists! Glad to have found this board. I
am in major need of some help. I recently got a new flute, it a Gemeinhardt open
hole (right now I have the caps in). I am having an extremely difficult time
playing high octaves. Anything above a middle E sounds very shrill, breathy,
very whistle-like and obnoxious. I didn''t have this problem with my other
flute, so I know this isn''t how it''s supposed to sound! Quite the
opposite... flutes are very soft and beautiful sounding, I really want that
back! It''s very frustrating to me since quite frequently it is necessary to
play very high notes on the flute. *PLEASE* help me!

What kind of flute did you have before? The headjoint
may be cut very differently.

high note trouble

I switched from an Edgeware closed hole to a
Gemeinhardt open-hole (with caps in). I think there is a mechanical problem with
the flute. When I play my old flute (which is not even a nice flute) then play
the new one there is an obvious switch from warm, rich tones (still a bit
breathy, but that's mainly a problem with my embouchure) to shrill breathy
tones... praying everything works out in time to play Christmas songs for the
family! Keep fluting- Lyndsey

high note trouble

I was flute shopping recently, and tried both an
Altus and a Pearl. The Altus had better projection, but I had a much harder time
on the high notes. On the Pearl, the higher range was easier than ever, and I
had control over dynamics, etc. In researching, I found that the headjoint cut
made a difference - smaller oval holes play easier in the high range, larger
rectangular are easier in the low range. You might want to check if Gemeinhart
makes different headjoint cuts.
