Post by s2jennie »

Hello.
i am a 8th grader who is
1st chair of our 25 at my school band.
I am thinking of buying the open-hole
YAMAHA 371H allegro.
Would this flute last until i graduate??

If not, why? and do you recommend any other models?

Thank you very much !

It may, and it may not. There's really no way to tell. Certainly it should last from a not-falling-apart standpoint, but it may or may not suit your playing and the level of the ensembles you'll be playing in for the entire duration. Have you actually playtested this against other instruments, or are you deciding just based on information gathered from the makers? I ask only because the Yamahas are solid instruments, but just like any other make of flute, they don't suit everybody, so it's really important that you try the various options within your price range so you find the one that fits you best. As for that particular model, I would advise you either to go for the 200 series, or step up to the 500 series. The 300's have a CY headjoint (which is what the 200's have standard), and thus will play very much like the 200's, but with open holes, and more silver. However, through high school, the holes are very likely to be useless (more a prestige than a utility thing), and the silver will have a much smaller impact (if any) than the quality of construction, so you're paying for things that probably don't really matter. When you get to the 500's other headjoints become options. If you haven't already, you should also try flutes from other makers like Pearl, Sankyo, Emerson, DiMedici, Muramatsu, Azumi, Amadeus, Sonare, Trevor James, etc.

Flutepicc06 makes a good point. You shouldn't just go for something without trying it out. Today I went to All State Band convention and we got time to go to the exhibit hall and I tried out all the flutes there. I tried out Yamahas, Gemeinhardts, Trevor James, Sonare, Burkhart-Phelan, Muramatsu and some other brands that were new to me. To be honoest, I went to the Burkhart Phelan stand and tried out the $20,000 flute and absoultely HATED THE THING. I tried a Sonare and was VERY IMPRESSED by it (i think the hj might be doing the job!) Anyways - just becuase it sounds appelaing in text doesnt mean its appealing to you as a musician. Expand your horizons and look at other flutes. At the Yamaha stand, I oculd definitely tell the difference between there 300 and 500s. The EC hj on the 500s was much better for me and between the 300s and 400s (400s are all solid silver except the keys), I couldnt tell the difference even with the material differences. So look around! :]]]
