Back at Flute after 30 years

Post by Pixels »

Greetings! I'm returning to the flute after 30 years (8 of which were spent playing the French Horn). I started on my old student Artley, which leaks like a sieve and apparently is not worth the cost of extensive repair. After that, I tried a used Gemeinhardt 3SB, which I liked initially, but it started to really frustrate me as my chops came back. I couldn't get anything but a windy tone in the upper register. I recently came across a VERY GENTLY used Yamaha 311 for a price I was willing to pay. I have 3 teens in braces, one of whom will start college next year, so the budget for Mom is small. Anyhow, it says "311ii" and I was wondering if anyone knows what the "ii" stands for.

Enjoying my new flute!

Congrats on your return to the flute! I'm in a similar situation. I'm coming back after a hiatus of 10 years of not playing regularly. I've got an old nickel-plated Selmer Bundy which my parents bought used when I was in middle school! Hoping to get a new flute in 3-4 months. Yippi!

Sorry I can't help with your question. I just wanted to say hello :D

Thanks for the welcome! I hope you find a new flute you're happy with. I really like this Yamaha. I've been struggling with the upper register, then, yesterday, I relaxed and it just came back. I was working too hard and tightening up too much. I don't have much endurance, but that'll come. Anyhow, it is so much fun to play again after all these years.
