There are so many things the absolute beginner
needs to know. I can't imagine trying to list them all. But taking a couple
introductory lessons with a private teacher can save literally hundreds of hours
of struggle so I highly recommend it. Getting a good beginner book. But if you
are looking for one tip. Leave your flute in the case and just work with the
headjoint for the first week. Experiment and listen. That would be my one
"tip"

Clean your flute real well. Get a polishing
cloth and cleaning rod, but do not use cork grease or key oil! If you go to a
local music store they sometimes have little packets for the flute or if you ask
them they'll give you the right supplies.

Don't use the polishing clothes that are
chemically treated and don't use silver polish or any chemical on the flute. If
you use any liquid make sure it doesn't get on the pads or corks.

I've been playing for over 20 years an never
used a polishing cloth. However, recently I purchased a new flute and it came
with a polishing cloth. What is it that you're suggesting we avoid about a
polishing cloth?

We use a polishing cloth here on our flutes. I
don't know if it is treated or not. It is a 2 part rag with 1/2 being gray
which is for silver and 1/2 being pink which is for tarnish. It has not caused
any damage to my flute or to my daughters. It is the same rag that we saw on the
repair shop table. The instructions did say not to use it on my daughters gold
lip plate. Kim

There are two kinds of polishing cloths.
Treated with a silver cleaner and untreated. The untreated are great and should
be used to remove fingerprints etc. The treated kind sold in some flute "kits"
are from what I have been told not to be used. I should have made that clear,
sorry. The piccolo is an evil siren that calls to the flutist.
