Bad fingering habit I can't break

Post by muzikislif3 »

Ok, this is kind of bad since ive been playing flute for almost 7 years, but what are ways to get rid of old fingering habits? I do the actual fingerings during whole notes but anything faster, I completely forget and change to my fingerings.

D natural

My fingering:
oxxlxxxo middle D
x

Actual Fingering:
oxxlooox
x

High F#

My fingering:
xoxlooxx (very common but nasty fingering)
x

Better fingering
xoxloxox
o
(I thought this one should be easier being that I double on alto sax and the fingering's exactly the same plus left middle finger)

there are others that I can't think of right now but all I want to know is how to get rid of these habits. I also have a very crappy flute lol. The D fingering I did was because I couldnt get the note out in middle school when I first learned and my teacher said it was ok...fail

Practice scales very slowly at first, using the correct fingering. Gradually increase the tempo (use a metronome). If you fall back to the incorrect fingering, drop the tempo back again. It will take a while, but you will get it.

If you need to check the fingering of a note, I find this site very helpful. The preferred fingering is listed first, followed by alternate fingerings.
