Yes, I've never heard of using rice paper on a dizi. I would think that rice paper would be much too thick to get the desired result in tone. I use either bamboo or fish skin.

I also meant to add that a simple system flute with keys would be comparable in price to a decent quality Boehm flute. There are many flute makers that make simple system B flat flutes. Some good ones are Michael Grinter and Patrick Olwell. Casey Burns also makes lower- pitched flutes, and his instruments are more affordable. Info for any of these makers should come up if you type their names into a search engine.
