Going on Vacation
I just got back from vacation a couple days ago. I'm amazed of how quickly the stamina of my embouchure weakens. On the other hand I've gotten back on track quite quickly.

Re: Vibrato on tone exercises?
My teacher suggested doing long tones and doing vibrato on the last note of each part of the exercises.

Re: In school and having to change everything
I'm going through the exact same thing right now. I just changed my embouchure positioning slightly and some days I sound amazing, but on other days it's horrible. As for control I'm still working on that too. I'm learning the upper third octave at first it was quite bad, but with practice I've gott...

Re: Moving on To Playing With Others
Update: I heard from the band director. He doesn't have anything for beginners, but suggested I contact the local school board. Oh well ... going to keep searching. I did ask him to keep me in mind if he does start something with beginners.

Re: Moving on To Playing With Others
You really do not want to loose it totally, it will make you a better player. You just do not want to let those feeling overwhelm you to the point of not playing. When people ask me what I think of my self as a player, I say "I can hold my own, and I don't totally suck!". I know I am a better playe...

Re: Moving on To Playing With Others
Thanks everyone for the suggestions and support! I have emailed the community band and basically told them that I'm a beginner and if they have anything for a beginner flute player. Ask your teacher! I'm sure s/he can offer some suggestions. If your teacher has other students (flute or other instrum...

Moving on To Playing With Others
Ok guys, I went to my teacher this past weekend and we played a couple duets. Well, this got me thinking ... One of the areas that I'm lacking is actually playing with other people. I came home and looked up any community bands in my area. There's one about 15 minutes away, but I'm nervous about con...

Re: Flute alignment
I wouldn't say to you what my preference is, because it's a result of years playing, and it's my individual preference now. I agree with this Zevang. So far I've changed the alignment and positioning of my flute three times. It started out with huge changes and now I'm down to minute changes. So te...

Re: New Yamaha flute - tight joints. Is this normal?
My Gemeinhardt was that way when I first got it. After a while (I would say four or five months) it loosened up and now a little over 2 years it's just loose enough.
I wouldn't try and adjust it yourself (unless you know what you're doing). Better to take it to a repair tech.

Thanks! But it's slow going. Every couple of lessons I realize how important it is to have a teacher.

Embouchure Improvements
Well, my teacher suggested that my embouchure needs to be smaller. I tend to have a lot of blowing sound underneath my tone. So, I'm back to working on my embouchure. I've made a few corrections, making my aperture smaller, shifting the flute to the right a bit more, trying to support my breath with...

Re: Cleaning Flute
I usually only use a microfiber cloth to wipe the outside and run a cotton cloth through with the cleaning rod. On rare occasions I use a Q-tip dipped in alcohol to clean the embouchure plate. Anything more than that I leave to the tech. I don't let alcohol get near the pads at all. I've seen how ea...
