My band director hates clarinets, even as a "novelty" double... You should ask your band director if s/he has ever heard of Benny Goodman. As a clarinetist, he was definitely a part of our jazz and big band heritage. Granted that today, jazz ensembles are usually scored for 4-5 (each) saxes, trumpe...

Thankies for that! I think my band director called it a turn, but it's nice to know the real name, rather than the slang. I'll be sure to check out the links.

It's played as I suspected, but where is time taken from? Just the notes between which it is indicated-ish?

o.O
The only thing I did was try to show the cleaning rod down...but I figured I would hurt the flute...my nearby pinano, and possibly myself.

That's really scary what they would do their flutes! Even it was well intentioned!

What kind of vibrato?

If your vibrato is particularly fast, you may be forcing it.

I suggest concentrating on your abdominal muscles (not your lungs, they don't do any of the work) and keeping your vibrate steady and rich.

Good luck!

Odd Articulation?

Not exactly sure if this should go here, but, mods can move it if they need to? There's the thing that looks like a ~ between notes. I forgot what it's called. My band director explained everything to me except how to play it. It's where the notes go up and down, then up again? How do I play it? Wha...

Typical trouble everywhere. I even considered auditioning for a local jazz group, but they declined me once they heard I would only play flute (and not work with the rhythm section--I play pinano). I would definitely listen to a lot of jazz, no only band band with flute, just just jazz in general. A...

Flute Headjoint's Cork

Hey all! Before, I began to notice how I would "go" sharp on my flute. But after I got this dent knocked out of my headjoint, I noticed it got worse. Before, it was a small problem...now it's much worse. One day, I checked the cork by putting the cleaning rod in the headjoint, and it's off by quite ...

Thanks for all the advice. However, my mom decided she could fix my flute. *horror theme* She took a small screwdriver and tightened one of the screws. Then she "undid" it. Although, I don't believe she fully "undid" it. It was the screw closest to the key. ... How bad of an effect could it have? I ...

Flute Fixing..By Myself

Well, I'm having trouble with my flute and one of the keys coming back up. For (very) annoying reasons , I cannot take it in to get fixed. I was wondering if there were some way I could do it myself. My problem is the last key on the body joint (middle joint) and it's buddy that also goes down...

Playing In Tune?

For some odd reason or another, I cannot get my flute to stay in tune. Is this because I'm not breathing correctly? My flute was examined about a month ago before the time when I first had this problem. I've only had this problem twice or three times, I think. I've only had it recently. And I've bee...
