French music is generally "medium" level as far as technical skills are evaluated, but it tends to be more "advanced" level when speaking of musicality and performance (interpretative use of vibrato, timbre, nuances, intonation, projection, and so on...). You need to be "mature and spiritually advan...

So what is considered intermediate? I have been playing for just under two years but I don't feel like I'm at an intermediate level. doesn't have much to do with the number of years of playing. You could have played for 10 years and still be at beginner level, if you don't work on intermediate tech...

Re: Practicing long tones, how many beats and speed?
I have a daily routine of playing chromatic scales to improve my high and low note tone . I have often wondered how many beats should I play each note in the scale and at what tempo. Also how many times should I repete each note. If someone could answer this that would a great help. since you're wo...

it all depends at which level you're at... Beginner : you could go with Gariboldi's Etudes mignonnes 0p.131 or Moyse's 24 petites études mélodiques avec variations (faciles). Intermediate : Berbiguier's Eighteen Exercices or Etudes for the flute or Cavally's Melodious and progressive Studies Book 1 ...

Re: D2 and Eb2--is it just me?
I happened upon this site through Google, looking for troubleshooting guides. It's been several years since I played a flute--I had sold mine, and today I got a new one. I've been having a bit of a time with D2 and Eb2...seems sometimes the tone is good, other times reminds me of Db. Another poster...

Play long tones and focus on the tone of the notes. Don't play too loud and be very carefull about the pitch in high notes.. The speed of the air stream makes them way too sharp most of the time...hence uncomfortable to listen to. Practice very carefully your muscle training of the lips for flexibi...

Re: recomendations
Hi, the part that strikes me in your post is this * i dont feel so confident with my vibrato. i can do it (kind of), but it's not something to write home about. i know all/most pieces have vibrato, but if a piece depends on beautiful vibrato, it might not be a good piece for me. i am looking for pie...

I was doing some research on youtube. Someone posted a video of Sir James Galway teaching a seminar. He was against using the "smiling" embouchure. Which I thought was an interesting idea. I haven't tried it yet though. this is probably the best teaching you could get anywhere.. Galway has the most...

If your flute is dated 1952, it might need an overhaul (sadly, it is quite expensive on professionnal flute)...but first make sure there are no leaky pads ... every tiny leak adds to another along the tube, and the lower notes becomes impossible to blow unless you squeeze the keys very hard, wich is...
