I have read this in a couple of places, heard in in masterclasses, and tried it...seems crazy, but try it: Practice on a pilates ball and/or squat on your high notes. It engages your core muscles and release tension in the neck and back. that does sound weird, but it sounds like it would work, so i...

I get so tense I sound bad... please help
I'm playing Taktakishvilli's Sonata in C, the first movement. I've noticed lately that the high notes are becoming harder and harder to play with a good, warm tone. I think it's because when I play them, I get very tense in my neck and throat. How can I help this? I need to concentrate my air stream...

wow, that's so cool! congratulations. as for me, i use offset. i have little fingers and inline is just way too awkward for me. it used to matter a lot, i think, in the professional flute world, everyone thought inline was better, but now i think it's back to not really mattering. that's my opinion ...

Re: Breathing help?
I've been playing the flute for 8 years and seem to have a much smaller lung capacity than most other flautists who have been playing as long as i have. it's very distracting in most pieces. I am a pretty little person in general, I'm 5'2 and weigh 90 pounds, which could contribute, but i don't wan...

I'm a senior in high school, first chair in the highest band. we wear these really ugly black dresses with a sort of beaded shrug thing on top... only it doesn't open at the front, it's more of a short jacket? hard to explain, but pretty hideous. hahah. i perform in competitions and showcases and st...

Re: College
I've been looking at conservatories, UC, and Cal state schools and I've been wondering what would good pieces to play be. My teacher said I should easily be able to get into any of the cal state music programs and I'm at an intermediate almost advanced level. What worries me about the audition proc...

I need serious help on technical things...
I'm learning Godard's Valse right now, and pretty much beating my head against the wall. I've learned other pieces with tough fingering parts before, like Faure's Fantasie and Ganne's Andante et Scherzo, but i never got them perfect or nearly good enough in my opinion. Now i'm trying to learn this o...

I played flute in the jazz band in my middle school for two years, but once i got into high school flutes couldn't be in the jazz band. it makes me mad too, cause the jazz band just played a song called Iroquois that had a flute part, and they made one of the alto sax players learn flute in a couple...

I played Faure's Fantasie for a few competitions a few months ago. I really liked it, but I got sick of playing it after a while. My main problem with it is that i didn't practice the runs thoroughly enough. so they were kinda sloppy. right now i'm working on Ganne's Andante et Scherzo. there's a yo...

I've been taking lessons from the same teacher for probably seven years, and she's never mentioned anything about my tonguing. Like I said, it sounds just like normal tonguing. I'm sure she would have mentioned it if it was a major concern... I've mentioned it to her before, but she didn't seem too ...

thank you for the advice. :) so the question is, if I am tonguing wrong, or not "tonguing" at all, what can I do about it? Is it going to hinder me a lot in the future? will I ever be able to learn double tonguing that way? when I've practiced competition pieces in the past, I never had the patience...
