Is it very difficult to learn to play the alto flute going from a C flute? Does it need a lot more air?

I'v always been sorry that I didn't buy one of these when they were still being made. So if anyone out there in fluteland has one in mint condition that they might sell please let me know.

I am looking for a particular kind of flute to buy. It is no longer manufactured. I've tried an ad in usedflutes without result. Might it be OK to ask on this board or would that be using the site in a way contrary to it's function.

I've read somewhere that when Gemeinhardt changed the pitch of their flutes they just shortened the instrument and didn't adjust the tone holes to suit the new length. I believe these flutes were made in the GDR. Anyone know anything about 'em? Well made or not? Is the maker still in business? Obviously the GDR isn't.
