Mouth hole shape?
I found following explanation of different mouth hole sizes and shapes on the page http://www.markshep.com/flute/Finding.html : "The two basic shapes used for the mouth hole are the oval and the rounded rectangle; either one is acceptable. The size of the mouth hole, however, should not vary too muc...

Shakuhachi (Japanese Bamboo Flute)?
Would someone happen to know, where I could I find a reliable place to buy Japanese bamboo flute, shakuhachi? In fact I would be pleased even with plastic one, because they are cheaper I have understood. I imagine there are similar exercise shakuhachi flutes for school kids in Japan as plastic exerc...

Re: Where do you practice?
Aren't saunas ussually just very warm and dry? I thought it was steam rooms that were the ones that had high humidity? Though I would imagine the high heat (leading to sweat) would be abd for the flute as well. Maybe the room was off? Original Finnish sauna is very hot and very humid while taking s...

Re: Which headjoint, Allen or Oxley?
Thank you guys (especially James_Alto) for very informative messages! I contacted also Trevor J. James in England and they were very helpful and tried to give some picture of the differences between Mike Allen and Andrew Oxley headjoints. I believe they would not have anything against quoting part o...

Re: Where do you practice?
As a Finn I decided to practice in our sauna, of course: http://flautissimo.wippiesblog.com/files/2009/02/huilu_saunassa_1.jpg By its nature sauna is well temperature insulated, so it keeps sound too. I thought one could practice in sauna without disturbing other family members. Unfortunately sauna ...

Re: Which headjoint, Allen or Oxley?
I guess I have to toss a coin then as I can't try playing either one before ordering
I just thought someone happened to know what are the main differences between these two headjoint makers. Of course it still would remain my headache trying to reason which would be better for me.

Which headjoint, Allen or Oxley?
I am planning to buy a new flute which will probably be a Trevor James flute again. I have had two Trevor James flutes before and I have been quite pleased with them. The new flute will be a bit pricier, making it possible to choose between tho different headjoints: one made by Michael Allen or Andr...
