Wedding music
I'm meant to be playing (just for a few minutes) at my dads wedding this coming July. I'm meant to be playing a short piece while they sign the register, and then again at the handfasting ceremony they're having (A pagan marriage ceremony held on the top of a hill in the Lake District, so all hippy ...

Strange question..about wrists
This is a strange question but has anyone found that their fingers, mainly ring and pinky, bend slighty sideways towards their thumbs, like a curve? Also, has anyone found that the end of their arm bone on the outside of the wrist tends to stick out a long way? I have both these problems, and wonder...

Help on multiphonics and quartertones
Hi I have to compose a piece for flute for my exams this year and have been set a challenge by my teacher to create an experimental piece, so using multiphonics, quartertones, fluttertonguing etc I'm really excited to be able to do this, but I'm not sure on how to play these techniques on my flute a...

The piccolo's not much different to the flute to play, its just getting the initial air flow right. Once you play a few scales and get used to how that feels, especially how to hit the high notes, its pretty easy. I agree with Dirty_Dave on this one, you need to get used to working for hitting every...

I don't play the alto flute much but I have borrowed one from school a few times before. The first few times I really struggled to get out the notes higher than the 2nd C but after a while it became much easier. You have to really loosen your muscles around your mouth and instead of trying to force ...

Callidor, I've been playing for around 9 years and I guess I'd call myself fairly experienced by now :) I remember when I'd struggle to play a short 2 bar phrase in one breath and it really annoyed me that my lungs were so weak! However, steadily over time (so slowly you sometimes don't realise it) ...

I know what you're saying, when I got to grade 3/4/5 i really wanted to give up because the music that I was playing was more or less the same the whole year round - exam pieces. God, they bored me to death!! But then I found a way out - band. I live on the Isle of Wight, UK and here we have a reall...

Teaching flute...help!!
Hi, I've been playing the flute for nearly 9 years now and have my ABRSM grade 7 exam next week. I turn 16 early next year and my old primary school have asked me to go work at the school part-time in the summer teaching the kids flute. They've currently got 25 8/9 years old children interested in l...

What fingers do you have trouble with when changing notes? All I can suggest is that you practise something like D major scale, or ever just repeating B,C,D,E,D,C,B to get your fingers in the habit of moving in that way. It shouldn't take long for your muscle memory to remember the change between th...

bad habit help?
I've noticed recently that when i play the flute my top lip is lop-sided compared to the bottom. I sort of...pull it over to the left and end up with a dimple in my left cheek, but I don't feel myself doing it. My flute teacher a few weeks ago told me to look in the mirror why i played a scale, and ...
