I too had problems reaching the low C at first, not because of my hands being small (my hands are quite huge i guess.. ) but my embouchure at the time just seemed to get very airy on Low notes. Without wanting to offend you, its probably your technique that is not giving you a satisfactory tone :(

A rich tone is aquired with the right technique, practice and you should be able to get it on the "primo" 8)
