Re: Brass Playing Ruins Embouchure?
I really know nothing about this. But a thought that sprang to mind is… if you are about to do a degree in woodwind performance (which really is a very prestigious, competitive and focused degree) and you already play 3 woodwind instruments; do you REALLY want to be picking up another instrument on...

Brass Playing Ruins Embouchure?
I'm a flute player, about to go into college or whatever. Majoring in woodwind performance (very aware of the threats this can pose), hopefully. I also play the clarinet and saxophone pretty well. I play in national competitions on the flute and hope to take flute very very far... I guess I forsee a...

Whoah I totally went for the first time to convention as a high school senior this year. It was awesome! I'm definitely going to try going next year. I had lessons with Angeleita Floyd, Diane Boyd-Schultz, and Mary Karen Clardy. And after this experience, I suddenly made the decision to never even l...

Wouldn't a good Japanese teacher be enough? It would certainly be exciting to go to Japan though... Yes, but here in the United States... at least, from what I know, I think it would be difficult to find anyone of pure ethnicity. And I'm always looking for a reason to go to Japan anyway, haha. I am...

I think the word talent has a pretty complex meaning. Anyone who plays an instrument has different areas of difficulty... a student and I being the top students at our teacher's studio has different things to work on. I have the musical phrasing and emotion, and she possesses the greater technique a...

Thank you all very much for your opinions.... this helps me out a lot. C_otter: Thanks for the example. I like all the versions too... but Jethro's has to be my favorite, haha :D I'm playing this piece at the NFA convention in Anaheim... and I really wasn't sure if I was to be showcasing myself or t...

Interpretations
Should a performer play the piece as the composer intended, or should the performer play it as they feel? I was playing "Andante et Scerzettino" by Taffanel for an informal recital, and played it with a dark emotion and a bit of anger in the first movement, because that is how the piece sounds to me...

Re: Shakuhachi, a bamboo flute
I just love the sound of this instrument... I have an obsessive need to talk about it xD I play a little. Marco Leinhard is one of my favorites. East Winds Ensemble has some great music from Miyazaki classics. The ensemble's rendition of Princess Mononoke is perhaps my favorite. Marco's playing is ...

Thanks for the link :D Erik makes such beautiful-looking flutes. I definitely want the end blown Shakuhachi in Concert D. But it'll have to wait :/ I'm saving up for a Miyazawa. My ancient Gemeindhardt is killing me. It's great to know that there are others here who know of the Shakuhachi itself, ha...

I have a native american flute CD... and I really love the hollow sound of this instrument :D I wish I knew more about it. But in a few days I'm going to a flute workshop and I'm supposed to be learning about and playing different flutes, one of them being the native american flute.... so when I kno...

Shakuhachi, a bamboo flute
The Shakuhachi is a bamboo flute, originated in Japan and thus mostly played in Japan. It is a lovely instrument.... I heard it for the first time in some background music on TV and I said WHAT WAS THAT? Because it most definitely sounded like a flute... but a screeching, agonized flute. Well I boug...

Thank you guys very much for replying :) FG18... I haven't really been out in the brutality of the music industry yet, and I'm really sorry about the incident at the school. But if you enjoy playing, then keep playing - if performance is what you love, then perform! I've been through realizing that ...

College for a Flutist
I've gotten great tips on getting into college with my flute. But I'm already a senior - and I've done nothing and I'm freaked out. I don't know where to go - but I know I want to go somewhere in the east or central of the US. I don't want to go to a school in the south for personal reasons. But any...

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=flute+fingering+chart Tips for playing in the high range: Fast sound. Not fast air, fast sound. Generally for younger players (age and experience) fast air usually translates into the habit of too much unfocused air. Have a fast sound. Focus the embouchure, but don't tighten it...

Eb and E Three Octaves
Hi~ I'm new to this site, mainly used this site for reference. But I can't seem to find anything on Eb4 or E4. For auditions, I play both D and Db three octaves, as well as C and B. I thought that D was as high as a flute could get, but my private teacher gave me these two notes above them, and I ca...
