Re: going for a test-drive...
Here follows the results of today's excursion (likely the first of many): Yamaha 381 & 461: I was really excited about these, since I've heard nothing but good things about Yamaha. The sound was awesome, with the 461 having a definite edge. But they didn't really feel right in my hands...almost as i...

going for a test-drive...
Finally have the funds to start looking for a new instrument! Having a stable job again works wonders...Which is good, because my old workhorse (the trusty but 20+ year old 104) is, well, old, and I outgrew it long ago. I've seen a decent selection of Powell and Yamaha locally, but not much else. Wi...

Re: Yard Sale Flutes...?
I'm aware of the posting, and try to keep track of it, especially when I'm actively looking. But it's good to let people know that it's a resource that's out there just in case. I suspect, given the nature of his work, that Frank keeps track of it as well, though I haven't specifically asked. Just t...

Re: Unusual Competition Bracket: need advice, please
Thanks, fluteguy. Sometimes being out of the competitive arena and in the real world where the 'judges' play favorites skews my perception of things, so I tend to assume the worst. I've got my choices narrowed down considerably now, to things that are reasonably within my realm of ability given the ...

Re: Yard Sale Flutes...?
Best as anyone can tell, the sales were legit and these people just didn't have a clue. The one seller was getting rid of a ~$9000 Haynes on the grounds that it 'didn't look pretty anymore.' One of Frank's students bought it on a whim--even she wasn't aware of its true value--and nearly got scammed ...

Re: Yard Sale Flutes...?
You're a bit far from me, I'm afraid, close to a two-day drive if I recall aright; I'm in pied_piper's territory. Not that we wouldn't let you come--who are we to stop you--but it might be a bit inconvenient. If you're looking for something a bit closer to home, go through listings in the papers for...

Yard Sale Flutes...?
Clearly, people around where I live don't know when to hold on to a good thing...or even to tell when they've got one. I went to see Frank at Associated today, and he told me that several professional-quality flutes have turned up at local yard sales (I'm talking $7000-$9000 instruments, here); he'd...

Re: What happens with flutes at brick-and-mortar stores
@ciuineadas: Typically, bone pile instruments are used as a parts source for things like lost pivot screws, and broken or lost keys. Most repair shops stock new springs in a variety of sizes and materials. The cost of springs are relatively cheap and it wouldn't make a lot of sense to spend time re...

Re: What happens with flutes at brick-and-mortar stores
In that case... Yikes. o_o ...and double yikes. Possibly with capitals and multiple exclamation points. We've got places like that around here too, unfortunately. Associated Music is the only place within 50 miles of me that I'd trust to sell me something that wasn't treated like that. Hadn't heard...

Unusual Competition Bracket: need advice, please
The upcoming Flute Faire for my area divides their brackets by age rather than Level. I fall into the top bracket, which will pretty much include everyone Level 6 and above. I don't want to assume (though I'm probably right) that anyone playing a score of lesser difficulty would have very little cha...

Re: Where do you practice?
Anywhere I can find a space, really. I prefer places with great natural accoustics, and they make me very happy, but I'll take whatever I can get.

Re: How much do you practice?
I usually get in about six hours of practice a week. Wednesday and Sunday are dedicated rehearsal days for my ensemble, and reviews of technique and basic scores are broken up throughout the rest of the week. Since I play multiple flutes, this system gives me the flexibility to work on what needs to...
