Re: Can you identify this 'flute'?
Hi Dan, It's not a flute. It's a single reed instrument called a bawu (you'll find lots of info on it on google). It has the same range as the renaissance recorder, however sounds completely different - rather like a cross between a harmonica and an oboe. They have a strongly diatonic folk sound to ...

Re: Please help me! URGENT!
So what did you play in the end Jason? I think I share Fluteguy's experience; as much as Carmen, Bach or Sanmartini might appeal to us, most non-classical players really think our repertoire sucks! I was told this week that Bach's Partita was 'academic and boring English music' (I thought Bach was G...

Re: Low register help
Hi there, if you've learnt how to direct the airstream across the embouchure (first octave) and blowing up into the embouchure (higher octaves), then you need to learn how to blow into the embouchure. Make a big O with the back of your throat, and blow in for the low notes. Compare that with your us...

I can't say I admire Pahud's tone at all. It's not just a bit metallic - it's completely metallic to me (sorry Pahud fanatics :) ) That's his choice of flute though. Pretty much agree with everyone here: 'best = too narrowly conceived.'. I'm a Jed Wentz fan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXhRHf1rhZ...

Re: Etudes
Yes - another Andersen enthusiast! I came across them on the free domain and got hooked. Also a fan of the romantic Koehler - his 12 Etudes sweep and soar beautifully. They are perhaps less popular than the Andersen Etudes, not because they are not free, but because he had to go and entitle them "12...

Re: Very rusty and need to learn a song with no sheet music
Best way to do it for free, is perhaps, to transcribe it yourself by ear - using a chromatic tuner. Play it in slow motion if you have the facility on your digital music player, and set the chromatic tuner to C. Chances are, the tune will be in A=440Hz, so you can try and work out the key signature ...

Hi there, welcome! Can't say I use this forum much either - too busy with life :) The Dimedici 13x range alto flutes are glorious - superb value. I play a Trevor James Recital II; I couldn't find the Dimedici 132x series where I live, and the cost unfortunately was double what you're been asked, for...

Hi there, probably not much reason for you to contend with scales at all!I do play classical music, but I don't practice Eb minor scales as much as I ought to :) If you like playing along to soundtracks and iTunes, you might find your chromatic tuner handy, for starting off on the right notes. Somet...

Re: suite antique by j.rutter
I don't know about others - maybe they're not in the same league as you? I always prefer looking at music before I buy it: the advent of the internet hasn't changed that. I'd still rather go into a music shop and look through the music to decide if I want it, rather than being forced to either buy i...

Re: tones coming from throat
Sounds like you're describing vocalisations (from your throat?) or impure tones from embouchure technique? Perhaps try a few embouchure positions; moving your lips to cover more of the hole; less of the hole; then varying the aperture shape and size; then varying the angle of the flute relative to y...

Re: Swabbing out with newspaper
Uggh. The paper will be abrasive inside the flute's body and leave ink deposits, or peppery paper dust. A cotton rag is better than a paper. Even if you do nothing, the moisture in your flute will be gone, regardless of whether you use a newspaper. The problem is... whether you wish to take care of ...

Re: Flute sounds like an oboe
a lot of jazz flute players do this by using the 'growwl' technique. I suppose if you're just starting, it's not that you're using the growl technique - you just don't know which technique to use lol. If you try reading the Trevor Wye books on intonation, he talks about making your flute sound with ...

Re: Haven't played in a long time!
Hi there, have you got a flute primer, like the Trevor Wye books, or the Rubank Elementary Method? Or if you're into luxury, the Moyse' tomes? There's a lot you can learn on forums, but it can be really frustrating, if you're self-learning, trying to filter out the crud from the wheat; and then self...
