Where to start teaching a beginner?

Hi All! I am in a bit of a quandary right now.... I'm currently a music major at university, been playing flute for about 14 years and also play alto flute. One of my professors just emailed me that her 5-6 year old daughter wants to play the flute and she wants to hire me to teach her daughter if I...

Re: Buying an alto flute

I'm so excited! Of course, my dad feels the need to tease me about my new flute: "Oh, yeah, when it comes I'm gonna try it out and make sure it works nicely for you. When you come back from band camp I'll be a regular pro!" And he can't tell a bassoon from a log! But I know he's kidding. Mostly. I h...

Re: 1st time going to band camp - suggestions?

Haha James! I highly doubt I'll end up as a kindergarten-cop, because all the students that audition get sorted into 4 different ensembles based on ability. :P Also, I'm not the cop-type. When I babysit the kids always like to boss me around and see how much hide-and-seek they can get out of me! Goo...

1st time going to band camp - suggestions?

Hello everyone! Sunday I am leaving for a 2-week band camp and I was hoping that some of you could share your experiences/advice so that I can get the most out of it. I've heard lots of rave reviews about this camp, my flute teacher is teaching one of the master classes there, and she thinks that if...

Re: flute problems??

I mean both open, both close, and one close and other open. In short ,I am really not sure if this flute really needs changing all its pads. I' m not sure if photos are allowed here ,but if they are ,it would be my pleasure to show you. Firstly, I want to mention that on a flute, some keys are resp...

Re: Bling

Traction and airflow, both excellent points that I hadn't considered. :) Thanks for answering my question. Those engravings are lovely, by the way!

Re: Buying an alto flute

Hi everybody, just wanted to post an update: I had to choose between a diMedici and a Pearl, and I decided to go with a Pearl because several people (some of them are professional flutists) I know have had very good experiences with Pearl and that makes me feel quite confident that I will get a good...

Re: Buying an alto flute

If it helps, I have a diMedici alto flute and absolutely love it. It has a solid silver headjoint and plated body but it has a gorgeous sound. This is very encouraging to hear because we just found out that the music shop in our area can order a model exactly like the one you're describing! No word...

Re: Buying an alto flute

Thanks for all your replies! Recently, we've decided against buying a cheapo from eBay or Amazon. So, the hunt resumes for a place that offers financing without astronomical interest... This morning I met with the flute director at an Ivy-league school near where I live. He let me try the school's $...

Re: Bling

I am curious, wouldn't it be better to put the engravings on the front of the lip plate so the audience could see it? Where these engravings are, they'd be covered by your lip while playing!

Buying an alto flute

Hi all, I'm new here, so I'll just briefly introduce myself: I'll be 18 in two months, I've been playing flute for 9 years and harp since October 2010, and I took about 2 years of piano lessons in middle school. Right now, I play a solid silver Yamaha C flute. Ever since I heard a bass flute on one ...
