Re: Armstrong Gold Plated 180 B?
Thanks for your response, and yes, it is basically a model 80. As far as I knew there was no such thing as a Model 180 either, but apparently there is. I've got one, and it is clearly marked. So still a mystery. Also, it is definitely gold plate. I suppose it could have been done after market--it do...

Armstrong Gold Plated 180 B?
Has anyone ever heard of an Armstrong 180 B? I couldn't find anything about it via Google. The serial number is 2-8571, which I think puts it at 1972 vintage. It has open holes, a B foot, and is marked "Sterling head and body only" as usual for an Armstrong of that era. And the whole thing is gold p...

Re: D flat Flute?
Exactly. I've worked on many Db piccolos over the tears--you don't see them as much anymore, but the good ones seem to have an especially bright high end for some reason, as does this flute. And, while more rare, I've also worked on Eb flutes. This is neither of those. And the fact that no one on th...

D flat Flute?
I have an old Db flute that I would like to learn more about. It was made by Selmer in Elkhart, apparently for use by the military--"U.S." is engraved on the flute and stamped on the outside of the case. "S-452" is engraved below "Selmer"--I'm not sure if this is a model# or serial#. There are no ot...

Re: Very old and unusual Armstrong flute
Thanks again. I will check out Mr. Kirmser's group.
And thank you for this forum.
The internet still amazes me! I asked a question in the right place, and now I have a link to one of the very few people on the planet who might be able to answer it.

Re: Very old and unusual Armstrong flute
Thanks Pied Piper. I was thinking that the numbers on the head joint matching the last numbers of the serial number was more than a coincidence. And it makes sense that records would be lost from the 40's, what with a war and all. I'm not sure about the screw on the trill keys though. I agree that i...

Very old and unusual Armstrong flute
I am a repairman who has been working on flutes for over 30 years and every once in a while I come across something I've never seen. Today I did an overhaul on one. The serial number, stamped just below the head socket (and also on the bottom of the foot) is #15258. I looked up the serial number cha...
