Re: flute cleaning advice
I feel like the dirt on my flute's body isn't really removable by a microfiber cloth. :( My flute's a pretty ancient Artley Symphony that I got 2nd hand, and the guy had it since the 90s. Well, the body is mostly fine, but the upper half of the headjoint isn't shiny at all. It already looks antique.

Re: Where to start
Hi, I played the recorder for a few years before playing a flute. I've been playing the flute for around 5 months now. Some things feel similar (phrasing/fingering), but they are still very different. I couldn't even make a good sound within the first hour. Recorder doesn't really require intricate ...

Re: Nearly 5 months later, how am I doing?
Thanks. Is there anything glaring that needs to be corrected, like maybe I'm holding it a bit wrong?

Nearly 5 months later, how am I doing?
I practice almost daily though I I've had a few breaks where I didn't play for 1-2 weeks. I don't have any teacher so I'm just (occasionally) reading "How to Play the Flute" by Howard Harrison. Fullmetal Alchemist - Bratja The Lion King - Kings of the Past (no bgm) There's a few mistakes with Bratja...

Re: Free Ear Training Software
Is this limited to one PC? I was wondering if I can use the same key on my home and office PC.

Re: First flute - Embouchure?
Newbie here but I'm confused. I read a topic in this forum where some guy got told off by his teacher because his upper lip extended farther than his bottom lip, but that's what OP is doing.

I have a habit of closing my eyes while playing.
Playing with open eyes doesn't feel right for me. Does anyone else do this too? I never feel like closing my eyes when I play other instruments. Is this some kind of bad habit I should stop doing now?

Delayed low note normal?
Is it normal that there's a slight delay to produce the lower notes? I notice that when I try to play low notes first, there's a delay between sounding airy and sounding properly. The delay gets longer the lower the note... well, at least up to C# since I still can't play C. The delay isn't there wh...

Re: Just got my flute, is low C supposed to be hard?
Hmm... I don't really know any flautist. The guy I bought it from isn't a flute player (just a sax player). He could only play a few notes for me which doesn't count low C. He showed me a video of the repairman playing a tune with it, though I don't remember which notes he used. It was up to second ...

Just got my flute, is low C supposed to be hard?
I've been practicing just getting to play the notes properly. I only tried playing up to middle C#, which is quite easy. However, going lower it becomes harder. I think I only managed to make low C like once so far. Is normal that the lowest notes are difficult? I actually can't make low D without p...

Re: Help picking between flutes? Beginner.
Thanks for the info! As for who did it, I'm guessing it was the seller himself. He also does other repairs; I saw an ad of his where he offered very extensive repair services for saxes. I guess a general instrument repairman is better than nothing. I very seriously doubt there's any dedicated flute ...

Re: Help picking between flutes? Beginner.
Kinda thinking of bumping up my budget. I still feel uneasy about the Armstrong 104. Seller has zero feedback and it looks pretty old. I found an Artley Symphony for $220, looks new and is freshly padded. Seller has good feedback too. Is this better? http://www.sulit.com.ph/index.php/view+classified...

Re: Help picking between flutes? Beginner.
Hmm... so aside from the description provided with the Armstrong, I check for leaks and body warping. I'll also have the guy play through all three octaves. I contacted him about body warping and leaks and he said it doesn't have them. He claimed that it can "play low D, the most resistant note". Is...

Re: Help picking between flutes? Beginner.
It's very expensive though! As much as possible I want to keep the price below $300. They're selling the YFL-221 for $750. I thought that they might have other models. I visited a branch last night but they didn't have a single flute in stock. Is it not suggested to buy a 20 year old Armstrong 104? ...

Help picking between flutes? Beginner.
I'm looking around for a flute. I've never played flutes and I have minimal music background. I'm still very much a beginner with the piano. I play the recorder just fine but having only 1.5 octaves is such a turn off. This is just for a hobby. I searched local shops and I can only find brands like ...
