THe higher notes on the picc. are not necessarily easy to get out at first. I would use earplugs when attempting them (it can actually hurt to play the high notes if your hearing is good, so that might be one of the reasons you're not "going for it" on the high notes). Some high notes speak better w...

Bach sonata recordings vary greatly. I have two different recordings by Aurele Nicolet (one of Pahud's teachers). One is from 1970s, the other from 1985. It's amazing to hear how his own opinion changed over the years about the sonatas! I also enjoy William Bennett's interpretations. About piccolos....

The Piccolo Practice Book by Trevore Wye has excerpts, tips and such for picc. players. One of the postings mentioned playing Bach on picc...indeed, Trevor Wye mentions playing baroque rep. on the picc is very helpful, esp. in the early stages. Vivaldi wrote some great picc. concertos that are fun t...

Jazz...it involves knowing classical theory thoroughly as well as knowing jazz theory thoroughly. Although there are numerous good jazz theory books out there, you really need to be playing jazz to absorb the ideas of the genre. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "jazzy". It could mean rhythmic...

sorry about the late response... I would listen to some waltzes (Ravel, Strauss, etc) to see how waltzes are actually played. There is really a specific feel to it. It is a dance, but it is somewhat free. Aside from sticking with the metronome, I think familiarity with the style itself is very impor...

If you have the serial number of your flute, you could find out its approximate age, and maybe then the manufacturer could help you with getting more info.

I don't know which piece you're referring to but here's a general idea on turns: If you see the symbol for a turn over, let's say an G (and you are in the key of G), the execution would be: G-A-G-F#-G as a quintuplet. If you see an inverted grupetto sign (this looks like the letter S on its side), t...

Hi, this is hard to explain in writing. One method of fluttering is to roll your tongue (like a native Spanish speaker does). Many people who speak only English have a hard time with this. I really don't know how to teach it. Essentially, the tip of your tongue is rolled up to the roof of your mouth...

Playing jazz flute was started by jazz sax players who doubled on flute. So, you might want to consult jazz saxophone players about learning jazz by ear. Since you're a bass player, I'm sure you're able to read jazz charts (chord symbols, lead sheets). Jazz flutists read lead sheets to know the chor...

Try not to blow too hard but instead exhale at a constant rate for as long as your breath allows. Put your palm in front of your lips and blow on it at a constant speed. You'll feel the strength of your air on your palm. You should try to blow out for 5-6 seconds (having taken one big breath). You m...

The high E A problem can be helped if you lift your right pinkie off the D# key when playing E (although you need it depressed when playing A). As far as the other splitting problems go... Splitting: in my understanding (and without hearing you), this might be happening when you're sounding both oct...

The slurs might be optional or they might mean portamento (it's hard to tell for sure not seeing it). Too bad you don't speak the language in which the book was published because this notation might be explained in the preface. As far as Petrushka goes, you just have to count it, but to get a better...
