Re: Is this a good school?

Yes. UNC of the Arts is a very good school for a flute performance major. Tadeau Coelho is a wonderful flutist and professor. I've heard MANY good things about him. I have a friend who is wonderful flutist at UNC of the Arts. I've also had several friends who had masterclasses Tadeau. I've heard onl...

Re: Anyone give me tips on my performance

I agree with most of the comments. I think you have a good grasp of how the piece should be played musically. I think you can work on polishing that. Try to make very smooth legatos in between notes and leaps, really make the musical line clear. I also feel a certain franticness in your playing...ne...

Re: Help decide a flute concerto for competition?

It depends all on your playing ability and how much you're willing to work on it. There's Reinecke, which is pretty and romantic. I think advanced high schoolers can definitely play this piece. I think this concerto is a very good option. There's Nielsen...which is not something every advanced HS ca...

Re: Poll- Flute

A bit of an old thread...but I was looking back at my posts back when I didn't know any better, and I feel quite ashamed. But nevertheless amused. So some changes: 1) What group do you play for?(college band, marching band, for fun) youth symphony, local conservatory community division's wood...

Re: Music Notation

Well I guess you could say "chords." The correct term would be figured bass. It gives you what chord/inversion it is in relation to the bass note. Triads (ex. C-E-G) Root position = Nothing 1st inversion = 6 2nd inversion = 6/4 Dominant Chords (ex. G-B-D-F) Root position = 7 1st inversion = 6/5 2nd ...

Re: The Hissing Sound.

Well, a hissing noise is certainly not normal. Perhaps it counts as an airy tone. The thing is, we won't know what causes this problem unless we actually look at you play. A video may be nice, but your teacher may know best. Also, you never know if it is the flute that is causing the problem. My flu...

Re: JS Bach Suite in H Moll

No, not a misprint. Usually, B minor is expressed as h-moll. ;) Moll = minor. B = h. B flat = B.

Re: EC

EC is a type of headjoint. I have a Yamha professional flute with an EC headjoint. The EC is a nice one. It is certainly not the finest headjoint ever made, but it is a good starter for step-up flutes. Most "step-up flutes" don't really do anything to your sound. However, the EC helps a lot with pro...

Talent vs. Hard Work

I've heard a lot of discussions about this lately. Some musicians like Jen Cluff actually say that there isn't really any such thing as "talent"...The level of your playing depends on how much you work and how much your practice method helps you improve...which leads to pedagogy. It is up to the tea...

I love the Khatchaturian Concerto! It is a VERY cool piece! I love the 3rd movement in particular. He is just a great composer in general. You should also check out his Adagio from Spartacus, the woodwind solos are breathtaking! His piano pieces such as Toccata are also very cool. I actually haven't...

Versatile Musicians, anyone?

A long time since I've been on this forum. lol Anyone who plays another instrument proficiently besides the flute? I played the piano since I was 5...and still playing! :) It's tough to play both instruments competitively! What annoys me is that I'd see flute music and say, "This is a piece of cake....

Advice- Transferring Teachers

Hi everybody, I'm thinking of trasnferring private teachers. I've learned a lot with my current flute teacher, but now his teaching style isn't really matching my needs. He knows his stuff...he just isn't very pushy or ambitious...etc. I can't really explain, but I feel like I'm getting held back at...
