In your opinion, would something like:
1. First movement of either Mozart in D or Mozart in G
2. First or third movement of Ibert
3. Burton
provide sufficient contrast?

What's considered "Romantic?" As far as the music selections listed, I basically went with what I already own. (A lot of my sheet music got thrown away by my family over the years... long story.) Since the music I have basically broke down into three themes (Classic, French '30s, Modern) I categoriz...

Audition Repetoire -- Advice Needed
I'm trying to put together an audition repetoire of three selections: Selection #1: Mozart Concerto in G OR CPE Bach Sonata in A minor Selection #2: Ibert Concerto (if I can get a grasp on it) OR Honegger's Danse de la Chevre OR Faillenot's Pastorale et Danse Selection #3: Burton Sonatina With the e...

Re: "Big Bands" I'm from New York. In general, the best music departments (and therein, the best musicians) in New York come from Long Island. They actually stacked our All-State qualifier competition to enable more kids from upstate to make it, because otherwise it would be disproportionately domin...

Really? I believe that in Trevor Wye's Omnibook, he states that the premiere used three flutists. Either way, though, it's the same point -- Debussy's original soloist couldn't cut it. My trick for taking deep breaths is to completely empty my lungs, and then slowly fill them "from the bottom up," k...

It makes your music robotic. When you use the metronome, sometimes, one tends to concentrate on the beat rather than the musical things. So after you stop using the metronome. Your music will sound like just some notes and rhythm. That's a big no-no. While I do agree with your point, I don't think ...

I do think it's commendable that you're helping out the other flutists in your section. When I was in high school band, we were all paranoid and scared of admitting that someone else could teach us something. But we were a very competitive flute section -- all six of us were very good, and there wer...

Another funny math story. Absolutely no relation to the flute, but ties into Pi. Any math geeks out there will appreciate. I had a HS friend who started college determined to graduate with an average of "Pi." Not because he thought that a 3.14 was the best he could do. He just thought it'd be increa...

It was a three or four day conference in D.C. It was a good experience to play with other people, and learn a little bit how the state-wide competitions are run in different areas. I'm from NY, so all I really know is NYSSMA. Plus we got to spend a day touring, and got to hear the Marine Corps. band...

I shudder at the thought -- I hate contemporary music! Even the harmonic note at the end of Ibert Concerto, Movt. 2, gives me the heebie-jeebies! (ducks) Random funny story -- In college, on a practice chemistry exam, we had to calculate the density of platinum. It took me all of three seconds to wr...

I read the story -- JPS Honors Band is the "John Phillips Sousa Honors Band," it's something run by the US Marine Corps. You mentioned winning their prize in HS, so, I thought that you may have heard of their Honors Band. I don't remember what the age break-down is for participation. I know that I d...

"Cheek" Vibrato, a la Baker
Among other things, I'm currently working on shifting my vibrato up into my right cheek. The process is slow going, painful, and the resultant "unevenness" in my embrochure (b/c the right side of my lips are puffed out) is making my tone edgy. Can anyone on the board offer advice? This is driving me...
