Dealing with compassion is something that I absolutely want to do, especially in this case. I love my teacher, and that's why I'm finding the situation difficult...because I don't want to hurt her ego, or her income, or her feelings, but I do feel as though I need to move on. Thanks for the suggesti...

switching teachers
So I have this problem... For the vast majority of my flute-playing experience, I have had one teacher, who is a good player and is an amazingly sweet woman. Over the past couple of months, however, I've started to feel like my lessons aren't really doing much for me. Most of the time, we either pla...

Hmmm... I began Faure Fantasie about a week ago...am I sensing a pattern here? I just finished Syrinx , as well as Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata, which I'm polishing a bit. And I just received word that Bloch's Suite Modale is the district piece for this year, so I've pulled that out again and will b...

I am also working on this right now...in addition to Schubert's Arpeggione sonata (eugh)... Anyway. So does this piece come into the opera after Pan has come to realize that he cannot re-create Syrinx and must live with what he has done, or is it played at some other part of the opera? What happens ...

Mmm. When I overpractice I do tend to lose my concentration, mess up and get frustrated. (Wash, rinse, repeat.) Overpracticing certain passages, particularly fast ones, has also been a source of trouble for me. Two things happen in those cases...I almost unconciously try to go too fast through the p...

I was wondering if there is any sort of general consensus on what classical flute CDs people love...or, even if there's no consensus, if there are CDs out there that are really great but that don't get listened to very often. Obviously this is a broad question, and one that is very subjective, but i...

Agreed...on the acoustics piece, I know that my tone got worse whenever I played on our stage (until I started working on the stage because I realized that performances are, unfortunately, not held in tiny practice rooms where your sound reverbrates back to you so quickly.) Just something to look in...

Eeehh. I actually like metronomes quite a lot. I've found that they are indispensable when working with those tricky, fast passages. While they certainly have their place in the world of things to throw against the wall, I couldn't live without mine. About the robotic thing...yes, I tend to use the ...

LOL. We theatre people flock together, because no one else can understand the incredible insanity that unites us. :D Right now I'm Cassandra in Euripedes' Trojan Women , and I must say, standing center stage and screaming at the people inside my head (in a manner of speaking) is quite a lot of fun. ...

Umm...you could go on Amazon and probably get at least a portion of each. With most of their CDs they have an option where you can listen to a two minutes or so of every track. I'm not sure offhand which CDs would be best for you to look for, but I'm sure that you could find that info with little tr...

I'm convinced that the bike statement is a lie. After not having ridden a bike for the past five years, I had to during a production of the Wizard of Oz (I was Miss Gulch and the Wicked Witch) and failed miserably. Like, swerving into the pit miserably. Not that that has anything to do with flute...

I have a DiMedici and I love it dearly. The embrochure hole is squarish, but that, as has been said, shouldn't be responsible for the airy sound. I'm able to get a very clear tone out of mine, so don't worry about an inherent problem with the flute...I'd say just to work on accustoming yourself to t...

Generally between $15 and $30 for a half hour, in my experience. Both of my teachers right now charge $20 per half hour...but then we generally end up having 45 minute lessons somehow. I'd totally agree though...you can teach yourself to a certain extent, but you can't learn everything that y...

Hmmm...I'm pretty sure the suite modale is one of the pieces on SmartMusic, but you need a subscription for that. If you don't have one, check with your flute teacher maybe? (It's a great piece by the way, although one of my favorite solos is the 'Danse de la Chevre. Telemann's sonata in F is also n...
