Hi I don't know if this'll helkp your original question Penny, but in my orchestra-band-type-thing (no brass or percussion...!) we had several first flutes and several second flutes. Of the three firsts I was the worst, so if the seconds were struggling, or only one had turned up, I'd play with them...

seriousness. It was, in fact, the way I got started on the flute...

I don't know how much practice I do per day, I've never timed it. I practice double-tonguing starting on both ta and ka doing scales, triple-tonguing on arpeggios, moving between octaves on the same note going up and down, long notes: loud in the lower register, loud and quiet in higher, and startin...

Another tip I've found - there's some great anti-perspirant available in pharmacies over the counter here in the UK called "Driclor" which is not only good under arms and on chins, but also fingertips. You don't want to be slipping off the keys... particularly if you're playing in a hall with no air...
