Bored or Frustrated with your Band?

Hi I don't know if this'll helkp your original question Penny, but in my orchestra-band-type-thing (no brass or percussion...!) we had several first flutes and several second flutes. Of the three firsts I was the worst, so if the seconds were struggling, or only one had turned up, I'd play with them...

I've made similar requests to that myself, in all
seriousness. It was, in fact, the way I got started on the flute...

i dont play the flute

I don't see what's wrong with their name. It's just an opinion. We hold the opinion that flutes are better than trumpets... so why shouldn't other people, say trumpeters, have the opposite opinion? Getting upset because a trumpeter who wants to learn the flute says trumpets are better is not going t...

Practice Time Poll

I don't know how much practice I do per day, I've never timed it. I practice double-tonguing starting on both ta and ka doing scales, triple-tonguing on arpeggios, moving between octaves on the same note going up and down, long notes: loud in the lower register, loud and quiet in higher, and startin...

Performance Tips-Long

Another tip I've found - there's some great anti-perspirant available in pharmacies over the counter here in the UK called "Driclor" which is not only good under arms and on chins, but also fingertips. You don't want to be slipping off the keys... particularly if you're playing in a hall with no air...

E3 to G3 trill?

A few weeks late, but I found one. [] Use E2 and G2
fingering, but overblow. How thick of me not to try that... d'oh.

Need your views/wisdom/garble on second-hand flutes...

So a good headjoint may well be the best option if the body is still working fine. I'm not sure about that as I've noticed a pad closed by several keys leaks a lot if one particular key is operated, but doesn't leak nearly so much if any of the others are operated. Same with another pad. (Yes, it ne...

Giving Flute Lessons

If she is absolutely new to flute, C major will be impossible for her. (Low C impossible, overblowing for every note tricky.) I remember my first few lessons were on reliably getting some sort of sound out of the headjoint only at first, then the whole flute. The beginner book I have starts off with...

Need your views/wisdom/garble on second-hand flutes...

Within the next year I''m going to need to upgrade my flute. I''m pretty sure now I''m at some intermediate level (Grade 6 ish in Britain) and my old beginner flute is the worst I have played and I''ve tried all my friends'' flutes (and they make me sound so much better! [;)])... I''d love to hear y...
