Icky
I remember as a youngster how I felt a fast, wide vibrato seemed a bit icky, just not cool. I wasn't playing flute then, but sax. Twenties jazz players commonly used fast, wide vibratos and I guess I wanted to be modern (well, 1950s) so I steered clear of it. Now, many years later, after picking up ...

Gold alloyed flute tone
I can hear a distinct tone difference from flutes made of gold/gold alloys...not sure I've heard a platinum. There is much more color in the tone...sort of a brilliance and resonance that silver plated or cheaper don't flutes have. With my solid silver, I can't really, truthfully say, but others say...

Doo Dull
I can double tounge through a scale or arpeggio OK, but if I do it slowly, I notice there is tone difference between first and second note. You know, my tounge is basically saying "doodle" to double tongue. The "doo" part sounds fine, but the "dle" half of the word/note is shallower sounding because...

Third finger F#
You won' t really need a tech to fix the third finger F#, just a small screwdriver. There is a very small screw (on my Yamaha anyway) facing toward the player, beneath the rods that pass by the second finger F#. Very small. First, observe the orientation of the screw head slot and remember that is w...

Poll
1) What group do you play for? Mostly just sit in with jazz or jazz flavored groups. 2) What kind of flute do you play? Mostly I favor my Armstrong alto flute, but have several C-flutes. The most expensive is a 1975 Artley open hole C-flute that has problems. If I play a C, I was have a brand new $4...

Low Volume Low End
My brand new $45 Bestler chrome plated flute has twice the volume on the lowest notes that my solid silver Artley M# 9-0, 1975, open hole (plugged) flute ever had. The Artley has had a recent complete repadding but still has never had a decent volume for the low B, which cannot be played quickly wit...
