I find that a lot
of times, when I have a cold, I have to take more breaths as I play--it's
probably because I can't get in as much air at one time as usual.

It's really hard to say what happened. Maybe you were having a bad flute day for the audition, or maybe you had a really tough judge. It's also possible that you may have been one of only a few good piccolo players, and one of many good flute players--therefore, they may have needed you more on pic....
