I recently went thru the same selection process and also narrowed it down to an Azumi and an Amadeus. Ultimately, although the Amadeus was OK, the Azumi was an easy winner. I contacted the Azumi/Altus company thru their website to ask exactly your question and I was told that the Azumies are tuned t...

Last August, I was lucky enough to see Ian Anderson LIVE! He had a lead guitar, bass, drums and a 14 piece string orchestra backing him up. It WAS Jethro Tull !! I've been a Tull fan since the late 60's and never new that Ian Anderson plays the acoustic guitar leads on many of the songs. He is an in...

Phineas, once, many years ago, I went to a concert. I think it was a Miles Davis concert but I know that it was also featuring Rahsaan Roland Kirk. I had only heard his name before the concert but I remember thinking as I watched him, "Is that blind guy really playing 3 instruments simultaneously???...

WOW Let the games begin! I didn't realize that this was such a controversial topic. So far, it looks like the "Wyes" have it. At least now I have a better perspective on how to approach these exercises and how much time I should devote to them before I meltdown. Thank you all for your input. All oth...

Flutepicc06 -- I AM a beginner and so, I guess I'll leave these techniques for somewhere down the road when I have more of the basics under control, as you suggested. I read most of your responses on the board and, as usual, although humble and unassuming, your response has been illuminating. Thank ...

Ian Anderson's style

Hi, I've been listening to a bunch of Jethro tull music such as the album STAND UP and I'm curious about how Ian Anderson gets that "dirty" sound from his instrument. He doesn't sound crisp and clean like Julius Baker or Hubert Laws, but I really enjoy his style and would like to be able to play tha...

Hi, and thank you both for your suggestions and insights. I checked out the link to Larry Krantz and it sounds pretty good. As for contests or auditions, I'm only competing with myself at this stage. But it's good to hear that the journey thru these exercises is challenging and time consuming for ot...

T & G exercises

As an adult beginner, my teacher just blessed me with the T & G exercise manual. I'm sure that Trevor Wye is just as good but my instructor is a T & G fan. In any case, I've begun on lesson 1 and after doing it for about a week now, I'm wondering if the time it takes for me to complete this exercise...

That's a great suggestion, especially since I'm a BIG Ian anderson fan. He often sings / hums while he plays eg. on BOUREE. I will have to learn to hum to play some of his tunes and if it stops the throat noises also -- that's a bonus!
Thanx. :)

I have the same problem, making some gutteral noises in my throat when I'm playing. I don't consciously close my throat. How can I consciously keep my throat open? Are there exercises for this?

If you're not totally locked into Yamaha, you might want to check out an Altus Azumi 2000, a Haynes Amadeus 850 and a Powell Sonare 5000. They all have solid silver headjoints and whatever configuration you want. Actually, The Azumi has a "Brittania" siver head -- .958 silver content as opposed to ....

You're both right about the open hole. D2 sounds better with the holes plugged. Thanx for the tip. I'll work on sealing the holes correctly with my fingertips.

Deina-kun, why did you say, "...since you play an Azumi..."? Is there something I should know about my flute?

Hi, thanks for the feedback. And yes I was definitely talking about D2 not D3. You say it's usually a pretty solid note because you use so much tube, but when I lift my left index finger my version of the note sounds weak and airy ( most of the time). I can usually move my fingers around on the keys...

The D2 demon

Hi, I'm an adult beginner, playing about 3 months or so. My instrument is an Altus Azumi 3000 w an offset G, a B foot and an E donut. At this early stage of my ability, my biggest demon is D2. More often than not it sounds airy, weak and inconsistent. My first 2 octaves are typically pretty good and...
