I'm not sure if it's from the stress from playing or holding my flute wrong. Lately I've been getting this pain in the upper-left portion of my back after rehersals, which usually last from 1 to 2 and a half hours. A friend of mine (who is in everything I'm in) is feeling the same thing. Anyone else...

I heard this peice being played by John Bailey at the Florida Flute Fair in Orlando two weeks ago. I thought it was a really cool peice, hope you have fun with it!

I think if you sit with good posture it would be okay to practice sitting...

But I think standing is better because you end up standing for auditions and solo performances anyways.

Not practice at Christmas?! With all that fun Christmas music out there?!?!

I play in my City's concert band and we just recently had our Holiday concert... about 1/4th way into the concert we had finished a song and I had been playing picc on it and my flute was on my flute stand. Make sure you're using the right picc embouchure too... not the same as a flute embouchure... and it's not tighter than a flute embouchure either.

I'm the ONLY male flautist at my school >_< But that's okay... I'm first chair :D (on picc too!!) When I play in the higher register on picc, like Bb6, my tone gets rather airy and, well... not nice.

Is there anything I can do to help fill the sound out? I use earplugs when practicing, just so you know.

Edit: I play on a Yamaha 62C wood picc.

I saw them on Fluteworld and was going to ask if they actually worked.

I can only get number 5 to work for me... The others I just don't seem to comprehend the technique. Oh well. I've always used number 5.

I'm the total opposite... I'd rather play 1st part where there's the main melody and also any solos that usually come into play in peices. I've played 2nd and 3rd for too long...

When practicing, take short breaks... practice for about 20 minutes instead a half hour and take like a 10 minute break in between each 20 minute practice session... that's what I do and I don't experince hand cramps anymore :) And also what MonikaFL said... Could be because you're holding it wrong ...

Well I tried them all out with my teacher. The Yamaha was almost instantly first pick I sounded WAY too airy on the Jupiter... didn't like the way it responded with any notes. It was just horrible for me. The Amadeus I sounded less airy than the Jupiter, but it was still pretty airy. Some ntoes were...
