Re: Long tones as punishment
I think they do have some good uses though. For example, if you DON'T want to concentrate on music per se but on your way of holding the flute, putting the embouchure into your chin, facing the stand at the right angle, not moving the flute around on your face too much (affects intonation), or if yo...

Re: Composers, Performers, and Audiences
If I gathered up all my wealth right now (not including my gold-plated Yamaha 674 flute) it would come to about $5.50, so not enough right now to buy a book. But, the book does look very interesting and I'll try and get someone to buy it for me for Christmas. In the meantime, I thought of taking som...

Re: Composers, Performers, and Audiences
Wondering if you have any good ideas on composing etudes. Basically, I've only just recently thought of doing such a thing, and now I am wondering about suitable chord progressions to use, or, dare I say it, how to go about it when one is not really a composer. The aim is to push myself (challenge m...

Long tones as punishment
With all due respect to Marcel, I've always thought of long tones as a form of punishment for flutists, secretly devised to drive students crazy and make them lose all interest in flute playing, so I've come up with a partial solution. One solution is to play something like Syrinx, but play it very ...

Re: Altissimo Chart: C#4 - F#4
I find I get C#4 with: ...... G# o x x |x o o| add B gizmo add the LH G# but works without i.e. do a high C but lift LH 1 (your pointing finger on left hand) This works for a Yamaha 674 with split E and B gizmo. Also check: http://www.wfg.woodwind.org/flute/fl_alt_4.html which mentions that same C# ...

Barrere and his platinum flute
Time Magazine Monday, Dec. 02, 1935 When Georges Barrere arrived in the U. S. 30 years ago he was roundly twitted because he wore a luxuriant spade beard, long pointed mustachios. Through these he managed to play a flute with uncommon skill, but it was not the wooden instrument his colleagues knew....

Re: Something that makes me mad as a musician.
Keep in mind, you can also use a flute as a peashooter. We know who your next target will be ... :D We had a college fair the other day at school and I was so excited to view the music programs of numerous colleges and universities. I walked up to one institute for the arts extremely excited because...

Re: jazz flute
I might suggest Band In A Box along with the zip file that has all the jazz standards. (Or, just type in the chords from your Real Books or elsewhere). You can record yourselve against a reasonable-sounding backup. If you can't find a certain song, look on the web for a .midi version and import that...

Re: flute player with asthma
Flute playing should actually help your asthma, unless you want to try bagpipes: http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_4700000/newsid_4703100/4703147.stm "Anything that makes someone with asthma take big, deep breaths to fill their lungs to capacity and teaches them to breath out slowly helps," a...

Re: Where do you practice?
There are underground tunnel networks in some universities (like Carleton Univ. in Ottawa). Under bridges, in Roman amphitheatres (when in Europe), metro stations, and, worst of all - practice rooms at the conservatory: which are not insulated from each other, so you can hear Tchaikovsky from next d...

Re: Pain in right hand...
I might suggest playing a bit of your piece in front of a video cam or digital video camera and posting it somewhere (like YouTube). Then, put in the file [video] description that you are having hand troubles and see if any of the viewers can spot problems. Also, post that YouTube link here so some ...
