Re: Performing in hotel lobbies

Thanks Phineas! One question though, for these kinds of gigs, are they regular? Like for instance will the management have you come down certain days of the week for a long period of time, or is it usually for a few times only?

Performing in hotel lobbies

I now have a period of time of around half a year where I'm relatively free and want to look for a part-time job. My teacher suggested going to various hotels and asking if they would like a small ensemble or just flute and piano to perform in their lobbies as a part time job. Does anyone here have ...

Yes I can attest to that. I clean my flute after every practice, but just half a year after it's chemical wash by my technician, it already looks vintage. Though it's not all bad, eventually the vintage look seems to look nicer than a shiny one! :) However, if you're planning to buy a plated flute, ...

I use 3M Anti-Tarnish strips and had my flute cleaned up by my tech about 4 months ago. It looked completely brand new, but now the headjoint is almost completely tarnished and certain parts of the body are also tarnished. I clean my flute thoroughly after every use and don't leave it outside it's c...

Hi! Welcome to the board! :D I also have this problem and tried lots of things, but none seem to be able to eliminate the problem. For me, I always look for places in the music(rests and such) to give me an opportunity to swallow. Though of course, you'll eventually see music where there is absolute...

Hi wooloo, nice to meet you! :D Currently, I do my repairs and COA at Windworks(though actually I'd say it's closer to Aljunied than Paya Lebar). Both of them there are specialists in band instrument repairs. One plays the clarinet and the other the french horn. Perosnally, I usually get Sean to do ...

Sadly, the last time I had asked, they said they will only allow trying if you buy one at the end of it all. I'm quite certain that if you know them well enough, they will allow an exception though. They had two Sonare flutes in stock at that time, so I was able to test it on the spot and compare it...

Hi! It's nice to see a fellow Singaporean here on this board! :D Regarding the headjoint, have you tried Band World yet? When I bought my Sonare there, I recall them having some Miyazawa headjoints in stock. Other than there, I don't know any other shop that stocks headjoints. As for the headjoint f...

I agree with flutefellow, especially on the keeping your chin up more. It helps a lot and also prevents any neck injuries. You could also try a technique which if I'm not mistaken, is used in jazz. I learnt it from a saxophonist friend who called it 'growling'. Basically, while sustaining a note on ...

The best way would be to just tell them that the key doesn't return to its original position after being pressed and they'll know what's the problem immediately.

If I'm understanding you correctly, I believe it's because the spring has come out. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it, but at the back of that trill key, behind the rods, there's a thin rod which should be hooked on. If it is loose and has come out, then the key won't snap back to it's origina...

Recommendation for a piece

Hi all! :) Some background info, my brother's wedding is coming up in a few months, and I'd like to play a piece or two for him. I'm looking for something at a Grade 7-8 level or so and obviously, suitable for the occasion. Unfortunately, I won't be able to have piano accompaniment, so it'll be best...

There's a lever that allows you to activate the low B with your left pinkie? Perhaps you mean right pinkie?

I used to have this problem too, back when I played on my school's old Yamaha which had pads leaking all over the place. Perhaps you could try taking a piece, preferable one which is simple enough that you don't have to concentrate too much to get it right, and pay special attention to your fingers....

One question though, if i use an ungummed cigarette paper to clean the pads, but no matter how long i press the keys on it, it still stays sticky, do i pull on the paper a little? Or are there other ways?
