Above the measure, it says "fltg." And then on the stem of the note there are three black diagonal dashes. That's pretty much it though.

Ooh update! I tried doing the "gargling" thing today in class and my band director told me I did it, I flutter tongued! lol. It sounded weird and I could only get it out once but hey, I guess I did it! lol.

Thanks, boglarka. That did help a lot, now I just have to practice it! lol.

And yeah, when I do it I sound like a retard, too. Haha.

Flutter Tonguing

Okay, we're playing this piece called "Vesuvius" in wind ensemble now, and there's this one section where the flutes have to "flutter tongue." I have absolutely no idea what that is, and my band director tried explaining it to me, but I still don't get it, lol. What part of the tongue do you use exa...

Whatever makes you happy...lol. Personally I wouldn't like it if all the other flutes in my section couldn't play well...cause then we would never be heard. But whatever - that's just my opinion.

That happens to me, too. My breath support is pretty weak. What I would suggest is start doing sit ups to strengthen your diaphragm...sounds like a burden, but I think it would work.

I'm not sure if you're talking about the drummers' playing overpowering the band's sound, or about their attitudes. About the playing, that happened a lot when I was in middle school, but now it doesn't really happen....bigger band I guess. As for the attitude... some (notice I said some, not all) d...

Oh gosh, I remember that post I made. Wow was I immature. As it turns out, that girl I was "competing" with actually had stopped caring about flute playing and band in general loong before, so all the stress that I put on myself was pointless. But my stupidity aside, there is a lot of competition in...

Hey, I totally agree with what everyone is saying. I used to be OBSESSED about being first chair in junior high, but now I'm having more fun with it and not caring whether someone beats me or not. And congrats on making 8th chair in honors band. I have honors band auditions tomorrow! :D I made fourt...

There are a lot of very talented people on here. :)

Me:
Flute - 3 years
Piccolo (although I guess it doesn't really count as a separate instrument, does it?) - 2 years
Piano - 5 years
Tenor sax - less than 2 months

Hi! I've been playing since the 6th grade too, although now I'm in the 9th grade. I don't have time to take private lessons, though. It's great that you got a new flute! And yeah, I know it's tough at first to cover up the holes when you're playing, but after a few weeks you'll get it. Any time you ...

When I was in the 8th grade, we played grade 3 music (sad, I know, but a lot of my middle-school peers didn't want to give the effort that harder music requires), and we had to memorize these scales (for flutes, all of them had to be two octaves and the C scale had to be three): G major C major F ma...

Flute vs. Piccolo?

If you have both a flute and a piccolo, which do you prefer? I can't decide right now - I used to love my flute much more than I loved my piccolo, but now a stronger bond has been developed between me and my piccolo ever since I started playing it for marching band. Last night at our 2nd competition...
