water dripping out of the flute
there is nothing wrong in the
instrument. it happens on other wind instruments also. when warm breath mixes
with the cold air inside the tube, condensation occurs and you have moisture,
much like getting rain when hot air on the ground rises and mixes with cold air
in the sky.

Counting in Eighths
The first one is what I learned in my music class
in grade school too. The second one is also correct. It's like asking how many
1/8ths are there in 3/8ths? 3. I'm not sure about that dotted half getting one
beat. a dotted half is equivalent to 6/8ths. vic

Practicing
at the start of each practice, how long does it take before
you could get to the right embouchure? it still takes me a couple of minutes.
i'm just thinking, if i'm gonna play/accompany a tune, it's already half-way
through, while i'm still finding my embouchure vic

If I'm not mistaken, you can compose your own tune/song there. Just play a chord on your left hand and the accompaniment melody will follow the chord notes. You can also record the sequence for playback later. I'm actually using my keyboard, too. I play a flute sound on it and then, translate the no...

to self or not self teach
Playing an instrument involves identifying pitches and intervals (relationship of the notes with one another). Schools encourage music students to take up ear training lessons to develop relative and absolute pitch. It's a big advantage having this ability in learning an instrument. If you can't tak...

double notes
When you hear two tones, you are actually hearing the fundamental frequency and the second harmonic of the tone (an octave higher). Like what they said, you need to focus your air stream to pick the actual note you want. Is it the lower note or the higher note? Rolling in the flute changes the pitch...

How to practice when you can't
I suggest you don't concentrate much on minor scales for now given the situation you are in. Minor scales depict gloomy or sad feeling, which is why it has been heavily used in blues music. Try listening (or if you can play also) to celtic music and gospel songs. You'll feel better. Yeah, music is a...

How to practice when you can't
Read music theory books. Study scales and styles of music and see how the flute fits in there. If you can't blow, you can always practice the fingering, sort of memorizing it. You can also try other wind instruments (recorder, Irish whistle) with easier embouchure. The other night, I was just wonder...

F-diddy, you are right! I can now play the flute tilted down,
blowing diagonally on the embouchure hole. It reminds me of sax players with
their sax in that position. vic

Lower Notes
If the sound is airy, that means not enough air is travelling inside the tube. Work out on your embouchure and proper positioning on the embouchure hole. You can do this by blowing on the embouchure hole with the head joint alone (not connecting the middle and foot joint) and find the clearest tone ...
