Although I bought both of the CDs and have looked at them, I've
not yet printed out any of the music that is contained in them. I like the
concept though, but I don't like the fact that their logo is printed on every
page of the music (it's aggravating advertising to me).

Best Flute Companies???????
The question of "What is the best flute company/companies?" has to be followed with another question--for WHAT? Currently I have three C flutes and they each have qualities that I like--for different purposes. Because I also like to play at jazz (I'm not a real jazz player) I like the warmth of the ...

Juilliard and other Ivy League Schools in the Music World
Another factor that has to be considered in this discussion (if it hasn't been considered already) is the professor. Although Juilliard is a great school, these days there are MANY great schools and many of the most-respected teachers teach at several of them--not just one. Also it is important to r...

Summer Music Camps for Adults
Every year, I explore the summer camps that are available that might provide a musical "shot in the arm" for me. This year is no different, but I thought I''d ask this group if they knew of summer camps that would be either for adults or would include adults. I know of many that are for students up ...

Finger positioning for C2
At the risk of offering unsolicited advice, let me offer an opinion on "teaching yourself:" Don't. Not that you can't, I'm sure you can, but I know from personal experience that it is also VERY possible to teach yourself wrong habits and bad practices that you may spend YEARS correcting in order to ...

Sight Reading
Although I don't consider myself an excellent sight reader, I'm probably a good one. Frankly, I'm much better on the flute than I am on the piano, although I can "get by" on the piano as well. Most of what I've read on sightreading suggests that it can be developed in one of two ways: 1) You have an...

practice
Before you determine how much time you should practice, I believe you should also answer these questions: 1. What are your flute goals? What do you want to accomplish? 2. What do you do well on the flute today--what are your strengths? 3. Where could you really stand to improve on the flute? Until y...

pearl flutes?
I have a gold Pearl flute, model 881 (which is no longer made) that I really do like. I do not like it for the high register (I have a Miyazawa that I like much more in the upper register), but I like the Pearl for its rich lower register and for the warmth of the sound (facilitated by the gold, I'm...

Improvising from lead sheets
Another source you may want to check out for improvisational ideas is www.jazzflute.com. There are several exercises on that site as well as other ideas related to improvisation. Another possibility for practicing improvisation is working on some ideas at the piano and, initially, writing down your ...
