Re: DZW Grenadilla Flute
Fluteguy18 if you have a lot you can say about wooden flutes please do share! I know time is valuable but I for one would love to hear your thoughts and wisdom on the matter. I agree with the durability issues. I see very few old metal flutes in use though they are out there being played. A flute pr...

Re: Trying to get back to playing
I so recommend studying with someone if you're getting back into it! Rather than just work on your own. He/she will be able to see you from outside of yourself, and correct any issues that could hang you up as you progress. And......they'll save you some time too and speed you along probably faster ...

Re: engraving a flute
Regarding flute engraving I do think it changes the metallurgy and consequently the timbre of the instrument.
Ok kidding. But seriously every time I play a flute with engraving on the lip plate it feels like scratches to me......kind of unsettling-

Right. I don't think I was trying to get into that now 40+ year old debate that materials make NO difference. I think they do but no.....I havent any scientific data or scholarly work at the moment to refute your citations. Although it would be nice to have a couple in one's pocket just to throw int...

Re: engraving a flute
Piper You're right......somehow I misread. My fault. Regarding whether crowns, corks, materials improve sound (feeling really) or not: I challenge you to disprove it. Discerning ears actually can tell differences in wall thickness, plated vs sterling etc and that's my belief like it or not. Doctoral...

Re: Fingering Issues
No short way. 1000 movements to correct it. Up to 1 million to master it. Those of us who play sax or clarinet sympathize. Just pick some exercises (ie Taffanel) and get your 1000s of movements in. The more time spent doing that the better. And when not practicing do it softly while in front of the ...

Re: engraving a flute
This is improving your flute? Why not a high performance jewel quality crown? I've heard this can improve resonance etc and is very decorative.... Or maybe gold or platinum springs if you don't already have them. Or a high end head joint of exotic material? That will def stand out and improve perfor...

Re: Allegro 471 Series flute
I would have you skip the 400 series altogether if you could and jump into the 600 or so if you can find an out going model or gently used. Either way you HAVE to play them and compare which is why players trial flutes. For me just playing it for 10 minutes isnt enough. I have to bring it home and u...

Re: sax question
OP Do yourself a favor: treat the flute somewhat seriously and practice it and even study. It could mean just taking lessons from whoever is the best and most serious flutist at your school. When I was in school that was a girl who was getting a scholarship for flute, and studied from a heavyweight ...

Re: Soundproofing
Im not sure I understand. Why would you even have to worry? Unless you live in a small dorm environment or crappy apartment with no insulation it shouldnt even be an issue. If both are true I'd recommend moving somewhere its NOT an issue. And practicing only an hour a day won't get you far. My warm ...

Re: DZW Grenadilla Flute
By "blank stare" I mean she doesn't appear to be aware that she is supposed to use any special care regarding a wood flute. She doesn't appear to do anything special at all which is a testament to the durability of the instrument itself (not her). Its survived over 140 years of harsh climes if its b...

Re: DZW Grenadilla Flute
Without a doubt a grenadilla flute will be more sensitive and delicate. For that reason alone I've thought of avoiding them. But, interestingly there is a significant number of wood boehm flutes out there that are at or older than 100 years old and playing well. My principal has one from the 1870s I...

Re: J.P. Hardy Piccolo?
PS also Di Zhao apparently has a nice intermediate grenadilla picc that can be had anywhere from 600-1200 bucks depending where you find them. Just another option so you don't have to buy under pressure. But.....if you love that picc I'd say maybe give it a lovely home. I suppose you could always se...
