Hearing damage...Ear plugs...
Good news and bad news. So I've been on a long journey (still very much in progress) to get better at playing the flute. I've made some good progress over the past year or so, in one specific area that needed help: playing up through the 3rd octave. The low and middle octaves have been relatively ea...

Re: Flutes and COVID19
Thanks, Phineas, for your reply. To be clear, I am self-quarantining (as everyone should be doing now) so I'm not worrying about infecting others, not worrying about catching it from others. I certainly would not pass around any instrument - especially a wind instrument(!) or head joint these days!!...

Flutes and COVID19
OK, I had to ask... We now live in the age of the COVID19 pandemic. We are warned about the virus and its ability to survive on various materials. It's said that it can survive on hard surfaces (metals, hard plastics) for at least a few days. On soft materials (paper, cardboard, cloth) for a day or ...

Is my flute contagious?
No, I don't mean to suggest that anyone would ever say that there's anything remotely "contagious" about listening to me play. I'm talking about actual bacteria, viri, and other microscopic nasties that might be all over my instrument. Last week, I was playing duets with a friend, as we do weekly. U...

Playing outside in the cold - bad for instrument?
It's Christmastime, and a bit cold where I live (temps are currently right around freezing - it's snowing lightly here on Christmas Eve). I've never played outside before, but thought of maybe going out and playing some Christmas songs. I would avoid being in active precipitation - no standing out i...

Tone and...muscle tone
I've been thinking about this for some time now and was wondering if this (below) makes any sense. Maybe I'm crazy... Like a lot of you (well, probably everyone), I'm trying to improve my tone - and in my case, there's plenty of room for improvement. I try to play every day, but work, family, life a...

Re: New Yamaha Intermediate Flutes
I bought a YFL-517 when I was visiting Tokyo this past February. I chose the 517 because it seemed like the "sweet spot" in the mid-range - not scary expensive, but clearly a quality instrument, hand made in Japan for the Japanese market (not sold in the US AFAIK). It immediately made a very noticea...

Re: G note not playing at all
Hello, I just started playing the flute and still getting the hang of it. Right now I can play the B and A notes with little trouble and they do sound accurate. However, once I attempt to play the G note, nothing comes out. It just air. When I slow my air flow speed a lot, I can hear a faint G but ...

Heated flute stand?
This may be a completely terrible idea, but it just occurred to me: the flute warms noticeably when it's played. You set it down for a few minutes, it quickly cools off. If you're in the middle of a performance (for example, switching between flutes, maybe you have an alto or piccolo part for a few ...

Re: Flute's Sound Dependencey on Material
All I know is this: I've had an old Armstrong 104 for decades (and that I really never played much until about 2 years ago). Although it's been well-maintained, my tone was pretty awful: the very bottom end was weak and whispy, the third octave was beyond my ability to get much beyond screeching. It...
