Re: Pinky action on 'fast' passages
I starting playing the flute when I was 64 years old. My first lesson was given to me by my granddaughter. You're never too old. Practice slow and with precision. The speed will come with practice. I taught martial arts for 20 years. The phrase I used the most BY FAR was "slow down". I'm pretty sure...

Playing Scales
When you are playing scales are you thinking about the notes or is it more of a mechanical exercise? When I'm playing scales I only think about what notes have to be sharps or flats and beyond that it's mechanics. After playing the scale a few times it becomes all mechanics, I'm no longer thinking a...

Re: Beginner lessons
Are you currently playing any wind instrument? I didn't realize when I started playing the flute how much air is required to play the flute. Of course in the beginning you're not very efficient with your air so that exacerbates the problem. This would be one reason you might want to start with 30 mi...

Re: Di Zhoa handmade? Just not sure about them...
Sorry to hear about your bad experience with these high end Di Zhoa flutes. My own experience with them is with an intermediate model DZ-400. After a year of daily playing it held up nicely and when looking for a step up flute I tried other brands/models that were two or three times the price and ye...

Flute Center of New York
I just wanted to share my trial/buying experience with Flute Center of New York. I have been watching videos on line posted by a young lady name Joanna. She has some excellent tutorials for new players as well as doing flute reviews for the Flute Center of New York. The Flute Center offered extended...

Re: How many play flute and another instrument?
I do some guitar strumming, banging of the keys on the piano and somewhat play the flute. I came to the flute late in life (64 years old at the time) and started learning how to play for health reasons since I've got issues that prevent me from running and doing other cardio "stuff". It was a real c...

Re: Need flute learning anecdotes
I guess at that time the library would be one of the only centralized locations for finding books on how to play the flute. Chance meeting in the flute book section of the library? I found the following regarding the 1800's and history of the flute that might be useful. 1829 - Boehm creates his own ...

Re: C foot joint Vs B foot joint
I also heard (I'm no expert so don't totally rely on this) that the extra length of the B foot joint might make hitting the higher notes a little harder and is the reason the gizmo key was incorporated.

Re: Step-up instrument recommendations
I'm also an adult learner and have been playing a Di Zhao 400 for about a year. It's held up well under everyday use (1 ~ 2 hours of practice every day) and tone quality, at least based on the individuals that have heard me play, is pleasing. There are a few Youtube videos of individuals playing dif...

Re: Di Zhao flutes
I have a Di Zhao DZ400 but as a beginner player it's difficult to give any meaningful advice regarding the flute. I haven't had any issues with it and when I'm doing my part the tone quality appears to be very good. One of my relatives is giving me lesson so once she has had a chance to play it (she...

Re: Absolute beginner at the flute
I'm a brand new player and even if you can't find a teacher locally there are a ton of resources available (books, videos) to help get you started. When I purchased my student flute I also purchased to books, Flute 101: Mastering the Basics and Trevor Wye Practice books 1 ~ 6 (got the TW book new in...
