Curious about Skype Lessons

I'm loving that the online age has given us so many opportunities to learn flute. For some folks learning online can be the only option due to work/family commitments, remote living locations, a lack of local teachers as well as the cost of private lessons. There's lots of fantastic flute courses an...

Should you bother setting goals for 2019??

Despite our best intentions, traditional goal setting is unfortunately terribly unsuccessful for most of us!! In my final article for 2018, I want to encourage you to success over the coming year with an alternative approach to achieving not only your dreams for your flute playing, but in all areas ...

How to Practice Low and High Notes

The extremes of the flute range can be particularly challenging. Low notes often sound fuzzy (or not at all!) and high notes can sound like nails on a chalkboard. If you're having trouble maintaining consistently beautiful tone over the entire range of the flute without considerable effort, then may...

Re: Digital flute music... is it the end of print???

Excellent point about backing up digital files. I can imagine the utter devastation to find your 100% 'safe' files suddenly gone. I'm absolutely guilty of not backing up!!!!

Developing your Vibrato...

Vibrato is one of those techniques that we're all expected to be able to master as we advance in our playing. For some it seems to come naturally and only slightly refined, for others it needs intentional training. (I found it tricky myself). Here's a short article that explains what vibrato is, som...

Digital flute music... is it the end of print???

Hey guys, I know that heaps of conversations on FB flute groups and forums have been on the topic of how to organise your sheet music. It seems like so many players are drowning in a way to easily catalogue, safely store and then re-find the music that they want, quickly...There's lots of great sugg...

Re: Reteaching my embouchure?

Hi there, The embouchure really is a tricky one - but you are recognising what's NOT working so that's a good thing! I'm not sure if you have the budget for online lessons. These are generally way more affordable, you can rewatch them over and over and you can take them whenever it's convenient. Whi...

Re: Who is your flute idol?

There's so much we can learn from watching and listening to flute players and flute music of wide ranging genres. Following my original post I thought I"d collect some of my favourite flute players in the article below. I must admit, I've gotten lost in Youtube for a few hours discovering some of th...

The best thing about learning flute as adults??

Learning flute as an adult I've found is completely different to learning as a school-aged kid. It can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking "I've left it too late" But there's actually some awesome skills and maturity we bring to the table that we've honed over our lives that help us to acceler...

New FB group supporting adult learners

Hi folks, I've noticed that the existing FB groups for flute players are full of amazingly talented people. BUT... for the humble adult learner, a lot of the discussion can go waaay over your head. So to fill this gap I've created a new FB group - specifically for the adult beginner (or relearner). ...

New Years Resolutions are made by most of us, but over 90% of us never reach them... Why?? Three main reasons (lack of planning, lack of accountability and a...

How to play dynamics for flutists

Using dynamics or volume is another way composers animate their pieces of music. Playing softly and playing loudly - how hard can it be, right?! Well as flutists we can make some easy mistakes when attempting to playing dynamics that means clear and focused flute tone AND our intonation can suffer. ...
