metal vs wooden flute

Depends on the wooden flute. Cracking is a big problem, they need more maintenance, and some don't project as well and aren't bright enough for some types of music. On the positive side they have a much more solid mellow tone with none of the shrill and tinny sounds that metal flutes can have. Becau...

water dripping out of the flute

Condensation is not a substance, it is a process. Yes if you breath on a mirror and collect the liquid, it will have the same general contents as if you spit. That is why you should brush your teeth and rinse your mouth thoroughly of all drinks and foods before you play. Because the moisture you put...

water dripping out of the flute

As James Galway wrote, we tongue in playing the flute and you can not help to put saliva into the flute in doing so. Maybe after an hour of practice you are getting hungry and it increases your saliva production. Water drips out of flutes where the air is dry and where the air is warm. Condensation ...

I see that you just post things in an attempt to argue or in kind terms promote a vigorous debate. But if you read the previous posts you will see no one said Julliard is the end all or even necessarily the best choice. I understand why Courtney, who appears to be a very talented and dedicated stude...

Practice Time Poll

NO respected teacher anywhere would recommend 6 hours of practice. If it works for this young man that is his situtation. The current accepted practice routine is 3-5 20 minute sessions for MS and HS students adding a couple sessions as you mature. Studies have proven reduced productivity with longe...

new flute

There are reasons that about 300 companies make flutes. One is everyone thinks they have a better idea, another of course to make money, but the other is different toots for different folks. Yamaha makes an excellent student flute and their upper flutes are good but not really competitive with other...

open holed,,,

So if you say no often enough your opinion will seem be more like fact? I have been teaching for 32 years and children adjust quickly to open holes and they are very helpful in improving technique. My teacher and many of my fellow teachers agree. So yes, yes, yes. And by the way the embouchure has n...

QUESTION?!?!?!?

You are looking at it from the student point of view. As a parent, I can tell you when you grow up you will see the other side. I have been on both sides. Most students need their parents to tell them to go practice. But alot of young kids have your view that their parents should just leave them alo...

Not all flutes have adjustment screws so how can
they all have a screw loose that is not to be tightened? Student Yamaha's do as
I recall have them.

I do not
believe that Flutdiddi was saying that you have to go to Julliard, just the
opposite he was looking for proof from Courtney that going to Julliard a huge
benefit to match the price tag and difficulty getting in. Cant we all just get
along?
