I had a problem like your a few months ago, I'm still fighting it, but my teacher suggested this excercise that's been helpful for me. And I quote: Stand with feet apart, arms down, holding your flute more or less at the joining places between the head & middle joints, and the middle & foot joints. ...

Welcome! Most of us are classical flautists, but I'm confident there are a few native american flute players as well. I've actually never heard of any of those flutes by name, but I haven't been a part of the flute community for very long. As for breathing, there's plenty of good reading on that sub...

I hate to be contradictory, but I've found that not only rolling in and out helps a great deal for tuning, so does actually pulling the headjoint in and out from the socket also does a lot, but that's for extreme cases. I've found that when my headjoint is pushed all the way in my flute is utterly s...

College flautist search, any ideas?
I'm still searching for a college, at this point I'm considering all the big name schools. I'm wondering if any of you have had any experience with any of these flautists, I'm trying to gather information on how they are to learn from. Jeanne Baxtressor, Mary Stolper, Bonita Boyd, Marina Piccinini, ...

embouchure: upper lip placement
Since I've stopped taking lessons for the summer, I've noticed that the end of my upper lip is even with the end of my top teeth when I play in the low register. Should this be avoided?

Also, don't forget about the placement of your tongue, it could very well be obstructing the air stream. Another thing, make sure you are using the wet squishy part of your lip to guide the air stream into the flute. One more thing, this is something I have trouble with since my lower lip is bigger ...

College searching begins any ideas?
I'm starting to look at colleges that have a good music program an excellent flute teacher and happen to offer Japanese as a minor. Do you have any suggestions? It's hard to tell who is a good flute teacher from their bio.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Piccolo lingo education
What are the advantages and disadvantages of bubble headed piccs, conical bore, cylindric bore... I know what they mean and look like, but how are they different to the performer?
