I've just had one of those "eureka" moments. I adjusted the way I'm holding the flute. I'm now turning it outwards slightly so the mechanism is up more. I also lined the embouchure hole up differently, with the outer side in line with the centre of the keys instead of in a straight line as I'd been ...

I found this after giving myself tendonitis in my hand from playing a tenor recorder. It's recovering quite nicely now though.

Thanks for the input flutepicc06. I figure I'll just practice for a bit without my little finger down all the time basically to get out of the habit of putting too much pressure on it. It seems to be working alright. bfloyd - I listened to Amsterdam Loeki Stardust recorder quartet on UTube. Pretty a...

I'm not sure that's entirely correct about the little finger, but I seem to recall seeing a video of someone on Utube demonstrating the Rockstro technique and he mentioned he didn't always keep his little finger down. I think you do need it to help stabilize the flute when playing certain notes thou...

Hi bfloyd, It was actually my left thumb I injured, sorry, I made a mistake there. I was using the tip instead of lower down because I found it uncomfortable with the key pressing on the side of my thumb. I can't turn my thumb around enough so it opposes the forefinger, so I have to use the side of ...

I found some really helpful exercises here: http://musiced.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=musiced&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.japanshakuhachi.com%2Fhandcareformusic.html These problems are often caused by poor hand position and/or gripping the instrument too hard. I just gave myself tedonitis ...

There wasn't a visible impession on the pads before. I had new pads put on some time ago and the flute wasn't played much until recently. I see your point though about how making a deeper impression would cause a slower response. I'll keep that in mind if I have a problem in the future.

I tried the rubber band trick and it worked. I put paper towel strips under the bands, and put them over all three keys on the footjoint. I can even get low B now as well.

5 mostly. 1 seems to work ok too, although I've read that it's not the proper way to do it. (I discovered it by accident :-)

I should add that these books don't start at the very beginning, so it might be wise to get his beginner book initially. I haven't found it too difficult so far although I can't get all the harmonic notes yet in the first excersises in the Tone book. It's going to be fun when it gets to the high reg...

Hi nas, Yes, I have the Omnibus edition Books 1-5. They have it on Amazon.com. It's way cheaper to get the set of 5 than to buy them separately. You don't get the CD with the set though, but if you really wanted it you could just buy the Tone book with the CD as well, and it would still work out che...

nasxxx: I have a couple of Learn as you Play books too. My brother bought them for me when I was visiting England a few years ago. (I'm from there originally). I recently bought Trevor Wye's Practice Books for flute so I'm starting to work through those. I have a lot of gaps in my learning as althou...

I was wondering if the embouchure required for a Bansuri flute would be similar to the Boehm flute. I like the sound of the wooden flutes but don't want to hamper the my embouchure development on my Boehm flute. Anyone have any experience with the Bansuri?

Hi nasxxx, I'm a new member too. It's a great resource and I've learned a lot from people on here. I found Nina Perlove through someone on here. She's great. Very friendly and helpful. I'm also self taught, just started playing again after a few years and now trying to develop better practice habits...

You're welcome. I just listened to that jazz piece you posted in another thread. Nice. I think I could manage the first part of it. Will give that one a try. :D
