My lesson teacher is helping me, but she really is leaving it up to me. She offers her opinions but really wants to let me pick. There was a 2-3 week time period when I didn't see her at all so ya. I have till October 24th till the auditions so still lots of time left. After seeing my teacher last n...

Picking an All-State solo excerpt?
So I am not really sure what I should do.. but I know I need to decide VERY quickly so all opinions would be great So I made All-State (Iowa) last year as a junior, and will be a senior this year. Obviously, I really want to make it again. I have seen many who got in one year and not the next so I k...

My friend has the 665 (but the CODA model) and has had a few minor problems with it. All would be pretty easy to fix.. her super loose headjoint (to the point it moves while shes playing it), sticky keys.. noisy thumb key (my Dolce did that too but was fixed as it just needed oiling) , screw coming ...

Private lessons really do help if you have a good teacher. I started playing in 5th grade and only had lessons the school provided up until the summer before my sophomore year. I was usually 2nd-3rd chair (of about 15). Sophomore year my mom decided I could take private lessons and I've improved an ...

I played this last year for solo ensemble, and I wrote my own cadenza (with the help of my teacher)
Heres a recording of the whole thing (the one of me actually at solo/ensemble is much better, but doesn't have the cadenza)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DCUS1GJSMs
cadenza starts at 6:37

So i know this is a little old... Did you get to try them out?? And I just wanted to add that my flute that I started and played on for 5 years was a King. They are older (my mom got hers new in highschool) but I think they are pretty nice. It seemed to be a bit nicer than most other student flutes....

I also agree with Phineas on going for the 500 series. The allegro isn't much different except it has a gold plated lip I think. I tried an Allegro (the all silver, or the more silver Allegro model) and while it was much better than my flute I had and has always played (it was old.. ).. the other fl...

What has really helped me is doing long tones starting on a B (right above the staff) and going up chromatically until you don't know the notes anymore. Also what helped me around third octave A/B/C (not much more above) was learning the notes above so like if I was having a hard time with A, learni...

I'd definitely look for a Yamaha in the 200 series, or if you can afford it the 500 series as they come with a handmade headjoint, which makes a HUGE difference. From your list I'd probably say the Jupiter. I have never played one myself, but I have heard very good reviews on them from several membe...

I'm not just starting flute :) I've been playing for 5-6 years, and i'm pretty advanced IMO. I played the Mozart Flute Concerto in G Major last year and got a nearly perfect score (one point off) in solo/ensemble. I just have not tried out on flute before, although I'm definitely up to the challenge...

Making All-State- Good solos?
So after recently deciding to quit violin lessons and to quit playing violin competitively, I now have flute that I need to work on VERY hard if I want to make All-State. I am going to be a junior next year, so I have two years, although making it both years would be.. amazing, I'd just like to make...

I think I am just going to do flute, and quit violin at school as a major thing. I will keep playing at church as I do, and do it for fun, but I just can't continue doing both so competitively. I really just enjoy band/flute SO much more, and I have been pretty positive I want to do this for quite a...
